Help!! car runs fine till gets to operating temp

Post by subarusteez »

okay so bought the car 2 weeks ago(93 turbo wagon) ran fine. had timing belt and waterpump replaced 2 years ago and just the usual valve cover oil leaks. been driving it since with zero issues. drove it 2 hours solid yesterday and just getting to my destination my rpms dropped and it started to sputter around 1500 then died. pulled over and tried turning it on...turned over and again sputtered and died right away. waited for awhile and then it started up again. drove about a km and it died again. waited even longer and then tried and i made it about 2 more km. got picked up and left it over night. when i started it this morning it was fine i drove maybe 5 min and it did the same thing! as soon as it gets to operating temp it seems to choke its self out, then wont start until cold again. what do you guys think? clogged cat? bad sensor? dirty throttle body? i have no idea where to start please help. its my 6th legacy, 3rd turbo model so i have some understanding. also the turbo seems to be whistling louder since this started. i checked for vaccum leaks but saw nothing.

can i clean it or does it have to be replaced? if so will any legacy iacv work? or is it turbo specific. also would the coolant temp sensor make my car stutter and die once at operating temp

Hi,
The IAC for the turbo has a 90 degree elbow vs. the NA's straight.

I'd suggest the Coolant temp sensor (CTS), too. I've also seen a MAF do what you're describing. You'll need a MAF from '90-'91 NA w/a manual trans or another turbo MAF to test.

Coolant tempt sensor, bad maf, fuel pump could be culprits. Knock sensor maybe.
