Clutch hydro steup?

Post by Tommio RS »

Hi everyone!

I have AGAIN another sort of dumb question that i should know....

I have this clutch hydro setup that i have NO idea what the hell subi its out of.....

I think its from a:

98-01 Impreza 2.5 RS
98-02 Forester
97-99 Legacy 2.5 GT

In any case, here is a picture.

Image

Also the trans swap that im doing is for a 98 leggy GT trans INTO my 93 SS

I dont think this clutch hydro setup will work on my 93 SS due to the hard lines. I just cant see where the heck you bolt the hard line to????

Thanks

I don't know what year/model that is from, but I would just see how things line up and if you need to make a bracket, make a bracket to hold the hard lines mounting point.

Thats a good point Legacy777. I could just make a bracket some how.

The hard line just seems to "long" and bent in all the wrong ways....

Its just seems dumb to ask but....

What do other guys use?

Do i just need to find a older car or something???

Thoughts???

Hi,
I'm assuming this is the '93 SS that has the bad AT.

If you don't want to deal w/the hydro setup, you can install a cable clutch like I did on my '90. I used a '98 Forester trans which is identical physically to your GT (just a different 5th gear ratio, due to the taller tires on the Foz, I believe), and found a cable clutch pedal setup, and followed Josh's/Legacy777's swap info.

The cable clutch bracket, fork, etc. will work on the GT trans.

The pedal effort even w/an ACT HD clutch, was virtually the same....per a buddy who compared mine to his SS hydro clutch.

wtdash.

Yes my "new" car has a dead trans in it...

I doo like the idea of a cable clutch!

Does it have a better feel than a hydro setup??? I have drive a cable style before i just cant remember...

Is the engagement point "more" defined? I hate the new subi clutches!!! Some just feel like mush....

If it is better i will TOTALLY do it!

I guess i will need the following then:

The cable clutch brackets,

Fork

Springs and stuff

Ball stud?

Pedal box?

Thanks

Feel is subjective. I've driven both and don't prefer one over the other. I do think the cable clutch is more 'engaging'. :-)

I guess i will need the following then:

Pic of most of the parts I used:

The cable clutch brackets - Yep

Fork - Yep - you'll want the cable one, which is the longer one in this pic:

Springs and stuff - Yep (?)

Ball stud - You can reuse the same one; just need to change it to the lower spot it'll thread right in
Image

Pedal box - Yep - pretty sure they're different between the hydro and cable.

Thanks
Other notes (regardless of hydro or cable clutch):

- You'll need the brake and clutch switches (should be on the pedal box)
- Driveline - a '90-'94 5speed should work, but......
- The GT trans is a 4.11 FD ratio, which means you'll need the rear diff*....and that means the pinion flange on the rear diff has different bolt spacing than the '90-94. So you'll need to figure out how you want to deal w/that.....I swapped a '93 pinion flange w/the '98's, but it was a PITA as that thing is on there tight. You could get a '92-94 FRONT section (I believe the '90-91 drivelines were all one piece), and use a '95+ REAR section, which should bolt right up to your '98 rear diff. (The '95-98 drivelines were too long.)
- You'll need the MT cruise computer, unless you can get the AT computer to work ( I couldn't on my '90).
- You'll see on Josh's swap info you can reuse some of the AT harness to wire in the MT's sensors/switches.

Not a complete list but stuff you'll need to know.

*If you want the VLSD 4.11, you can find certain years of the Impreza RS, Forester S, and OB's I'd get the axles w/those as they may use the male axle stubs.

Here's a pic of some more old info (doesn't include anything newer than '03), but NOT verified:
