JDM 5 speed...No reverse?

Post by Baddog »

Bought a JDM 5 speed tranny. The 96 4.11 Close ratio 5 speed. Claimed to have ~45k miles on it. Heh. Well all the forward gears are beautiful. No shaft play. Nothing. However it will not go into reverse. It feels like it's locking me out. And every once in a while if I cram it really hard it will go right in.

1 out of every 50 or times it will finally go into reverse. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

not sure it it will help but have you tried shifting into 2nd, then going into reverse

Does it shift in reverse with engine off?

Im wondering if theres a problem with the fork or something lodged in there.

The only way we can get it to go into reverse is from 2nd to reverse. but it's still a pretty rare chance.

Hmm, as crappy as this seems, it may be worth it to you to open it up and check out the gearset.

Figured that much. It's weird, when it goes it goes extremely smoothly though.

There could be a problem with the fork, or maybe the bearing for the shift fork rod is getting stuck. Bad spring or missing spring.

The reason I asked if it will go it reverse when the engine is off, could be pilot bearing. More than likely its in side the Transmission. If the pilot bearing is bad it will continue to spin the input shaft making it hard to get in reverse.
