Timing tensioner question...Knock?

Post by Baddog »

So I recently put together a frankenmotor for a friend. Her car ran GREAT for about 3 days and in traffic all the sudden it just out of no where sounded like it was knocking. Tore it down look like it had jumped a tooth. So I took a spare set of 2.2 heads with cams in them and swapped them over with a new belt and what not. No metal in the oil pan.

I reused the tensioners as they are only 20kish miles old from her old 2.2.

My question is does the earlier generation (pre 97) have tensioner pulley failures? I don't see why all the sudden the motor would just start knocking like crazy at a dead stop and then shut off.

Threw a rod bearing or something. Replaced all the idlers and tensioners today. Noise is still there. Very nasty. Just don't understand why out of the clear blue sky. Oh well...25D for the win right?

I am unaware of any earlier style tensioner failures. I personally think the earlier tensioners work better.
