fuel filter question

Post by quicklook »

when i first got my legacy ls awd i almost ran out of gas in it on the freeway. i got off freeway, engine was shuddering like crazy. went to station for gas everything ok.

bought a fuel filter the other day because i did not know when this was changed last, it had the subaru swash on it, could it be the original? car has around 125k on her.

did not put filter in because it was so cold out, then i was on the freeway, jumped on the car on the ramp 5500 rpm in 2nd and 3rd slowed down and a little later engine was shuddering with a half tank of fuel. got off freeway sat still for a while car ok. went home changed filter.

is this fixed?

thanks

No it's not the original. Your fuel pump would be a pathetic mass of shrapnel if you had your original fuel filter for 125k miles.

The fuel filter might fix it, it might behoove you to run a good fuel injector cleaner while you're at it (i.e. NOT Prestone)

Whenever I have hesitation and driveability problems it has never failed to be the fuel filter. They seem to last about 20-30K for me. Water in the gas would also cause your problems if you keep going to the same place - I know in Detroit I would drive by stations at night and see them with garden hoses in the underground tanks. And I wondered why gas was so cheap there. Learned the hard way to go to the more expensive stations. Finally the news found out about it and ther was this big thing. Gas prices all of a sudden went up to normal.

Garden hose. Like he was filling up a pool. When it hit the news they were talking to all these people who's new cars' engines had ended up wrecked (though they didn't explain how they were destroyed and I'd like to know as it's not like they'd get hydrolocked. The most I could see was needing to pump out the tank and change the fliters.) I caught a bad tank myself in my '84 wagon. Took me over an hour of cranking in the freezing cold to get it to fire (otherwise always kicked on the first turn). Finally I limped on what felt like one or two cyliders to a close-by quality gas station, dumped in some stabilizer and filled it with new gas. After about three minutes the car was fine and never mentioned it again.

Detroit for you.

When I was living in Ketchum ID a gas station got busted for watering their gas. Their prices were about .08 a gallon cheaper then the other 3 stations in town
