Putting an auto transmission in is hard.

Ill leave most of the painful details out.

In order to get the two lowest studs to line up I put a long extension in the loop next to the alternator, clamped a pair of vice grips to the end and put a scissor jack between the extension and the radiator support. This held the engine at a good 20 degrees.


I had a hell of a time getting the knob in the torque converter into the center of the flex plate. Finally I pulled forward on the TC slightly and it slid out from the transmission

So I tried moving the transmission into the TC while bolted up but that was impossible. I unbolted it from the flex plate and after 3 of us messed with it for 15 minutes each we finally had to take the transmission back out

Now I got the TC back on the transmission. Thats a good job in itself because you have FOUR spots where it can get hung up! I decided I didnt want to do it a second time so I took the air sander and made the TC knob rounded on the end.

Hopefully now it will be easy to line up. I gave up on that for the time being to remove the axles from a different car for transplant.

Anyone have pointers?

Drop the engine out with the x-member and line it up on the floor then fit it

That is a possibility, we have most of the items disconnected already. Just need to drain the fuel and coolant and disconnect some electrical.

You think the suspension needs to be removed if you only plan to drop the engine a few inches?

I think you can get away without having to do that.

My mechanic always pulls the motor for this kind of job. He saya in the long run its quicker and easier on your back.
