newbie question

Post by damonmlime »

can anyone with a 92-94 legacy turbo tell me what the code on the block is? i looked at what was supposed to be a turbo block and it just said ej22 the timing belt cover had 16v turbo on it and the heads had dual exhaust ports is it a turbo engine or just a regular 2.2 w/ a head swap? thanks for any info you can give me.

Can you take the heads off or is it in the car? The experts can probably give better information.

Early EJ22 NA and Turbo both had dual exhaust.

The turbo block just says EJ22 on it. I would assume its a turbo as a head swap would be unlikely unless they're going way out of their way to try to rip someone off. I believe the same castings are used for the outside of the block, which would make sense from a cost stand point. A turbo head (I'm guessing this is a bare block with heads) should have a hole drilled and tapped for the water to the turbo on the pass side head at the bottom left (right next to the block). I can't see any other telltales on mine.

"92-94 legacy"
Why only 92-94?

They did make a turbo in 91, and I would say that it is a turbo motor if the timing cover says "Turbo" on it, mine does too and unless they swapped timing covers, it is a EJ22T

I've looked and I can't find any engine serial numbers. I guess when these things are major collector's items, you could always lie about them being matching numbers.

How much of the engine does he have? Is the turbo coolant filler tank installed near the rear driver side intake runner? How about the water pump -- is it the turbo one (with the thermostat housing on the front rather than the bottom)?

the guy has the whole engine, turbo and all, the only strange thing i noticed was the metal coolant tank on the front drivers side of the engine. the rest pretty much looks like my rs engine.

Uh... You're not in North America, then, are you?

North American turbos have a plastic coolant tank on the rear left (which is the driver's) side of the engine.

The Legacy/Liberty RS sold in RHD countries has a metal tank on the front right side....

As far as I know, the only EJ22 turbo with a metal coolant tank on the right is the one used in the Impreza 22B STi.

So something's up... :?

The passenger side head will have oil lines coming out of the back that are used for lubricating the turbo. If these heads do not have these lines, then it is most assuredly NOT a turbo'd engine.

either you got the wrong numbers, or something's up.....those numbers don't correspond with any engine numbering. the number is ej22xxxxxx & contain letters & numbers.

i'm not exactly sure about the coolant bottle, but i thought it was metal, when i saw ej22, i kinda got dissappointed so i didn't really pay that much attention. as for the numbers on the rear of the block, i am positive i wrote them down correctly. i'm gonna call the guy tommorow and see if i can give him some money and go ahead and take it home to remove the heads. he says he has the receipt where he bought it at a junkyard and he can get the vin # from the car. by the way is $400 a pretty good price whether N/A or turbo w/72k? and yes i am in the u.s. thanks to all who helped. i appreciate it. damon p.s what should i look for when i get the head off?

The only negative space around the cylinders should be some holes for the coolant. The open-deck N/A block will have the cylinders joined to each other and to the block horizontally only. It will be obvious when you see it.

BTW: I think I finally found the block serial# buried under filth on top of the flywheel housing: 788283

Get the car's vin and I can tell you for sure whether the engine is from a turbo or not.....this is assuming the engine is really out of the car that you get the VIN from.

actually....once you get the vin...you can find out for yourself.
