help me find correct plug wires!
I need to replace my plug wires. I'd like to get something aftermarket, nice silicon whatever. But I have a phase II EJ25 in my 97 GT. (boostjunkies ex) and I have a 97 GT diamond coilpack. Hence my plug wire dilemma. I've posted about this on nasoic, didn't get much help. My turbos away for the winter...so I'm hoping you all allow my later legacy woes...
The 01 rs coilpack has male towers....while the GT's diamond coilpack has female...
I think I figured it out. Basically, the outside diameter of the female connectors on the coil end of the 01rs spark plug wires is just the right size so it can serve as a male connector when connecting to a female coil tower connector on a 97 legacy gt diamond coilpack. I hope that make sense. So basically I think my car has the wires that were stock on the 01rs engine (that was put in my car) and they are connected to the stock gt diamond coilpack. Anyways, I'm hoping a set of 01rs magnecors should be similar and fit between the 01rs engine and 97 gt coilpack.
Anyone know if NGK makes these wires? I havn't been able to find them...I guess otherwise its magnecors...
Thanks

like all SOHC EJ25's I think...that is I think they are all the same.
Its kinda oval I guess

(__) I guess kinda like that, its symetrical though...

czo79, I sent you a pm about this. The ones on the car already are the stock PHASE 1 wires. We did not use the phase 2 wires.

I must have missed the message or that part...
So they are the 97 GT wires? Interesting...I'm surprised they fit at the plug end since one is SOHC and one is DOHC, it would thing the design would have been different and such. This is good, as I have a set of magnecors of this type already from my old GT....sweet!
Thanks

It doesn't seem to me that the DOHC EJ25 wires spark plug boot will fit right with the SOHC EJ25. Looking at the wires that are on their now, that were there when I bought it from Adam, they don't look like any DOHC EJ25 spark plug boot I've seen. This is a pickle. Well, today I get my magnecors for the 97 gt, so I'll see if they fit, but I'm doubtful.

Maybe you could get a set of Phase II wires and swap in the terminals and boots from a set of female-coil-pack wires. It's not that hard to do. Just grab the terminal with a pair of needle-nose pliers and yank the wire through the boot. Then un-crimp the terminal and pull off the boot. Installation is reverse of removal. :)

I was thinking about that...
I also think that magnacore doesn't make the spark plug boots for their subaru wires, I think they buy ones from subaru and attach them to their wires, you can see the silicon where they seal it. I think I might ask if I can send back my 97GT wires and get them to put the SOHC EJ25 spark plug boots on them. Or perhaps I could do that myself...
will have to see.
thanks

Yes, Magnecor buys the boots from Subaru. Mine had no silicone sealant or anything on them; they were just stuck on. The fact that the 8.5mm wires are much wider than the stock wires keeps them very firmly in place.
It's a lot easier to deal with the coil pack end than the spark plug end on an EJ25 because the spark plug boot has a bend in it. But either way can be done. A little dishwashing liquid and water help.
It's worth a try asking them.

Hello all...
Unbelievably, I still havn't dealt with this problem...
I'm wondering, can anyone see any advantages/disadvantages between going with (magnacore either way) SOHC wires with the older style coil plugs connections from the DOHC, or should I go with the DOHC wires with the SOHC spark plug boot/connections swapped on? I actually have a set of DOHC wires, so that might be easier, but looking at them, I think I'll send them to magnacore to replace the plug boots, I don't want to deal with it myself. The only real possible worry I could think of, would be if there was a problem with the length of the wires being different...and I know either set of the magnacores has extra slack compared to stock just to deal with custom setups...or so I have been told.
What do y'all think?
thanks

I agree with your assessment. Either way should work. The lengths would be the only potential issue but they should be fine either way. It's hard to do plug boots yourself (but it is possible if you can handle lots of frustration without crying) but coil boots are pretty easy.
I guess it all depends on how much each way would cost. Can you return your Phase I wires and get Phase II wires for a similar price?

This might be a stupid question...but can the length of the spark plug wires affect timing? screw it up if they are different lengths, etc? I guess the difference would be so small it wouldn't ever matter...but I had to ask.
My mechanic replaced one wire that needed replacing really bad, until I get better wires. He said he was able to find one around the shop. I'm wondering if maybe a set of wires from one of our cars, a BC/BF would work. Cause I'm pretty sure that some of the EJ22's came with diamond coil packs with female terminals, and since the heads are both SOHC like my EJ25, perhaps the spark plug terminal/boot of the wire is the same on both engines, meaning a set of EJ22(t?) wires would work perfect on my car. What do y'all think?
thanks

Well, I bit the bullet.
I ordered a set of custom magnecore kv85 EJ25 SOHC 8mm wires with the connectors for the 97 GT diamond coil packs female towers. I can't believe it took me so long. Luckily they seem quick. Cost the same as normal. My coilpack seems like it is mounted in the same position as the stock 01 rs, so hopefully wire lengths won't be a problem. As I remember, magnecor wires run a little long for a variety of reasons. At least they have on other subarus I have seen, compared to stock wires. I think its cause with their fat size, they don't always fit into stock guides and such...so they problem make them a little long to give flexibility.
Thanks

I may post this question on another thread...so what's the correct model # Magnacor wire for our cars? 92-94 Legacy Turbo for example? Lots of confusing choices here (page 15 of the O-S section)...
http://www.magnecor.com/magnecor1/files/catalog.pdf
I'd like to order a set of the 8.5mm wires (KV85s) any idea what vendor has the best deals?
Thanks in advance for the info,

I used to get magnecor, but stopped dealing with performance BS like them.
94 BC w/ AWD Sold 6/25/08
92 BJ Rust bucket gone
90 BC (I think) Stripper, gone since 2k
86 GL10 Turbo 4wd, Gone since 99

So if those work then the 45180 would be the part number to get for the 8.5mm wires. That make sense since they are female...
