Hello Legacy Central.
I have a few questions about cams on the loved EJ22T cylinder heads.
See people swapping cylinder heads for MORE power than doing cam swaps?
I see that you "can" get EJ22T cams BUT i have heard some mixed bag of reviews from Delta.
Are delta cams any good???
Im after a wee bit more torque than power. Torque is was matters to me not power soo much.
Dont get me wrong here, i KNOW the EJ22T heads are more for torque than power. They "flow" not soo great

My car is a full Rob Tune 550cc setup
4.11's New trans and clutch
BFG boost electronic controller
Garrett GT2860RS turbo
By NO means is my car slow, I just want a wee bit more kick still. CAN YOU BLAME ME!!!!!

Would a Rob Tune be able to handle a pair of Delta cams or similar?
How the crap do you remove the cams out of these stock cylinder heads???
Do you pull them out through the front?
Do i need to pull the cylinder head off the block........I hope not.

Hi Tom,
I haven't installed the cams personally, but have ridden and driven in cars with them.
Fun but the idle sounds lumpy and aggressive (in a good way).
To swap in any cams into an ej22t, you would need to remove the timing belt, cam sprockets and plastic covers. Remove the valve covers, unbolt and remove the rocker assembly on each head. Then the cam slides out! The driver side slides towards the front of the car, and the passenger towards the rear (the turbo is in it's way so that has to go). It's pretty easy after the first time.
I've never tried it with the engine in the car, and I'm unsure there's enough room for the passenger side to slide out before hitting the DP and then firewall. You'll want to replace the cam seals for both sides and o-rings on the passenger side since you have the cam cap cover off.

Hmmm I do like more rumble at idle!
Well i find that interesting that the drivers side cam comes out the front and the passenger sides came comes out the back.
I have mucked around with a few sets to 2002-2005 impreza and legacy/outback heads from 2000-2005 cylinder heads and those heads are the SAME basically.
They used the same casting one casting for two heads. LOL.
I guess that makes sense for the EJ22T
The only 2 gray areas i see now are:
Turbo charger removal and such other parts.
Where to get some "modded" cams.
Dont get me wrong hear.
I have swapped many MANY turbo!!!
Subaru's seem to like to pop turbos.....Well on the newer gen stuff anyways.
Im no noob on this.
I know the hardest part IMO is the lower oil dump rubber tube that goes to the pass side cylinder head.......
If you dont get that just right you will fight and fight and fight.......
Wish it was as easy as a WRX or STi cam swap..... Other than the cam bolts LOL.
Anyways enough ranting

I can give you my experience as I've run the stock ej22t and ej22t with the Delta 220 grind cams & Wiseco pistons that raised the compression ratio to 8.5:1.
Here is the post with the stock motor.

And here is the new dyno numbers with the cams & slight bump in compression ratio. The CR really didn't affect things too much; it just lowered the amount of boost needed to make the power. The first graph is noted well, but the big thing you'll see is the added torque in the lower rev range.

The idle is a bit lopey which alright. It does run rich at idle and I get the rotten eggs smell with the cat. If you run these cams with the Robtune he may need to tweak things a little to get the most out of them.

I basically have your setup but, i have a Garrett GT28 vs. TD05 16g and rob tune.
And your dyno graphs DO make sense to me! It makes sense that i can smash some subaru's!
My car does seem to run rich anyways....Gas mileage is better than my stock 93 for some reason?
Also i have no cat in my exhaust. My province does not need them on cars 94 and down! LOL!
My only 2 issues now are:
Getting a re tune from rob for a cam swap....maybe? I could just risk it and try.
Getting and installing cams into my car WITH OUT pulling the heads/engine out......
I guess Delta just takes your cams and reworks them to this 220 grind.
Might just have to wait to do this sort of job when i have the engine out maybe.......

From what the tuner told me he said the car feels like a built 2.5 WRX.
You could run the cams without a retune, but you likely wouldn't be getting the full potential from them.
Yes, Delta can take your cams and rework them or they may have cores available and you would just send your old cams back to them to get your core deposit. I've never tried pulling the cams out with the engine in the car. I would guess it's possible, but if it is it'll probably be a real pain in the butt.

I don't think swapping the passenger side cam inside the engine bay is possible. You could just take the heads off, I have done that with the engine in the car before. I think I had to jack the engine up a bit to get the head bolts to back up far enough. I am about to send my cams to delta on Monday. 170$ for the 220 regrind, and they said they don't have any cores in stock, so you will have to send yours in.
