Mike-Tracy's New 92 SS
I'm taller than an outback!
Goofy suspension and wheels
Cleaned up my garage to fit her
Finally home sweet home
As alluded to elsewhere, I picked up a new 92 SS 5mt shell. Even though it's the same year and color as my last one, it is a much cleaner car in many ways. I'll use this car to showcase (to myself) all the Subaru knowledge I've gained over the years. It'll be a final swan song for my 1st gen turbo ownership.
I couldn't have done this build without the help of my good friends CJ91LEGSS and Alphius.
Here's the parts I have for it, most nothing is installed at the moment:
Engine:
EJ22E with new rings and bearings, stock phase I NA pistons
EJ20k WRX heads with STI Cams
CR should be in the 9.1x range. Easily tunable with my ESL ecu.
TD04HLA 19t Twinscroll turbo. This is good for at least 300CHP, with instant spool
JDM 4th gen Legacy GT twinscroll headers and up pipe
Cobb 3" Bell mouth DP, with TS flange
Oil cooler
phase 1 dohc timing tensioner bracket and old style tensioner
STI oil pan, pickup and baffle
FMIC (aftermarket 100% recirc valve)
Hardened group N mounts.
Walbro 255 LPH pump.
Trans:
2005 Legacy GT 5mt & rear LSD
New oem-spec replacement clutch
Hardened group n bushings on x-member
Home made diff bracket solid bushings (basically fill the stock air gaps with 3M windoweld)
Cartboy short shifter and shifter bushings
Suspension:
2004 STI shocks with zerk fittings
Legacy specific H&R springs
20mm front WRX wagon sway
20mm Whiteline rear sway
Interior:
Full black interior swap
Canadian headliner, center console, seatbelts
Some kind of boost and AFR gauges mounted to my perrin dual gauge pod.
Ver 2 WRX seats front, 1998 2.5RS rear seat. I'm looking for an all black, folding rear cloth seat if one exists.
Momo 4 Spoke EDM steering wheel with cruise control.
Exterior:
EDM headlights
Rear EDM garnish

Re: Mike-Tracy's New 92 SS
I've been sitting on some Legacy twinscroll parts for years, I've decided that I want to use them on this build.
I have a TD04HLA-19t turbo, which has an 8.5cm exhaust section (vs 7mm on the td05 the ej20g's came with). Wont have the same top end as a td05, but lag will be a thing of the past. The turbo in the stock JDM 4th gen legacy was rated at 276chp, with peak torque at 2400 rpm. 276 HP at 14.7 PSI. On a 2 liter. Not too bad! I'll have it tuned to 18psi or thereabouts, so the car will have ~300 chp.
I got a cobb 3" bell mouth DP with this car, and bought a Kinugawa legacy twinscroll DP flange and gasket set. So once everything arrives and gets welded, my engine will be 90%+ complete.
I'm still working on the wiring, I have removed all the old hacked up wiring, and have installed intact wiring from a 1993 Touring wagon. Everything seems to be plug compatible so far, I just need to make a jumper harness to go between 4EAT plugs and the 5mt trans.

I haven't heard of anyone complaining about how slow the regular TD04s spool up, but this should be like a reasonably powerful v6, instant power, everywhere lol.

Re: Mike-Tracy's New 92 SS
Little bit of update:
CJ91legss is helping me finish the engine. He's gotten the long block done:
In the mean time, I removed all the hacked up dash wiring:
And got to installing the wiring from a 1993 TW. All the connectors are plug compatible with my SS so far, with the exception of the trans plugs. I'll be making a patch harness, as detailed in Legacy777's auto FWD to 5mt AWD swap.
Got some things to install yet:
And that twinscroll TD04HLA-19t:

Re: Mike-Tracy's New 92 SS
There was an 05 LGT at the junkyard this weekend. The engine was already gone, but I did grab the trans and diff.
In the past I have steered people away from using this trans, because it doesn't have a built in speedo gear. But, subaru being subaru, there is a way to add one. It involves splitting the case and swapping in the gear, gear shaft, some snap rings, an oring and a thrust washer. 4.11 FD has been my favorite final drive in a subaru so far, so I hope to use that in this SS.

Re: Mike-Tracy's New 92 SS
My buddy and I split the trans today:
Start with the center diff, it comes off in one piece.
Then you split the case halves apart
On the passenger side you can see where the new speedo shaft & gear goes
The speedo gear shaft is assembled in this order onto the shaft:
larger snap ring, speedo gear, thrust washer, smaller snap ring, oil seal.
It slides right into the opening on the pass case half, but I plan to order and replace the input shaft seal & bearing, as well as the output shaft seal, and axle stub seals and axle stubs since I plan to reuse my older male-female axles. After all those arrive I'll reassemble everything.
One of my worries about this tranny was opening it up and finding everything broken and abused. I had pulled the drain plug at the junkyard and all looked well, no metal shards or chunks. Just the usual oil sludge. Taking it apart today confirmed that everything looks to be in good shape.

Re: Mike-Tracy's New 92 SS
Parts list:
Speedo gear retrofit:
Shaft = 32713AA002
thrust washer = 803012060
upper snap ring = 8050121020
lower snap ring = 031512000
Gear (30 tooth) = 32714AA190
Oil Seal = 806712100
General transmission:
Input shaft seal = 806725090
Input shaft bearing = 806427060
Output shaft seal = 806735210
convert to axle stubs, these are for transmissions that have built in stubs:
RH axle seal = 806730041
LH axle seal = 806730042
Must get axle stubs from a 4eat junkyard car, they pop out with a bit of force. Make sure their clips are still attached on the inner stub! Last time I paid $10 for the pair.
All said and done, I got the trans and diff for $140 on half off memorial day weekend. About $200 is needed to convert it to use our female style axles and add a working speedo gear.
Normally I see those transmissions going for $750 - 1000, and you'd still need to spend more to make it work. Given all the other options that work from the get go (1990-2004 Legacy, 1993-2007 Impreza, etc), I'd say the 05+ LGT tranny at full price isn't "worth it."

Re: Mike-Tracy's New 92 SS
Great info Mike! Thanks for sharing.
I really need a new trans for my Impreza. It's got bearing issues and syncros are old and worn out at 200k miles. It has a 3.9 final drive so if I could find good newer trans with that FD ratio I'd love to get one, do the work on it and swap it in.
