Will 91 SS engine fit into a 97 Impreza?

Post by KC0514 »

Okay, here's my question:

I can pick up a 97 Impreza with a 2.2 non-turbo 5-spd, with a broken motor, real cheap.

I have a 1991 Legacy SS turbo 5-spd.

Can I pull the 91 Legacy turbo engine out and bolt it into the Impreza?
Is it "plug and play" or a major swap?

I know, sounds like a dumb question....... But can anyone humor me with an answer?

I like my Legacy but the body is starting to fail....

Mechanically it's a very easy and straightforward swap. Electrically it's a little involved. You can't use the stock 1997 engine management so you need to wire in the turbo ECU and some of its sensors. You'll also end up with an OBD-1 engine computer, rather than your stock OBD-II, if it matters to your emissions people.

Some people say you can just use your stock 97 management and some piggybacks but I don't think it's a good idea. If you were to do that, though, it would of course be electrically simple. The simplest way would probably be to swap the 97 intake manifold onto the turbo engine.

He'd be OK with OBDI in MA if he knows a guy  My car has one more emissions check left.
