teaguespeed's post about swapping JDM legacy heads onto our turbolegacies got me thinking (bad thing, I know :P ) . . . but,

There's a set of turbolegacy heads in a junkyard near me (the engine's attached too which might make for a good engine buildup) so here's my crazy idea.

The extra set of heads allow me to send off a set of heads to get built up to whatever specification I (with your guy's help, of course) decide. Now once I get these re-worked heads back I figure I'll have this extra set of stock heads that will be just kickin it. However, if someone else wants them for their own build up, well I could just send them off for the price that I paid for the heads from the junkyard. You see where this is going, right?

Eventually, I'd see a lot of people benefitting from this with minimal cost (for the stock heads of course, not sure how much the porting/polishing/valvetrain) costs. I'm really not willing to undertake buying these heads without interest from other owners out there, so whattya think?

sounds like a good idea, i'd get in on it. what kinds of increases in power would you expect from reworked heads? just a fun fact, i was looking in this subaru repairing magazine and it had an advertizer selling heads, turns out ours are the most expensive subaru has ever made, besides maybe the wrx's which werent listed. they cost like $675 each if i remember right. how much do you think you'll get them for at the junkyard and how much will you sell your old ones for? is all this tuning a rather large/expensive job? money is not somethink i have in plentiful supply at the moment.

Hehe. Lemme put it this way . . . The yard I'm getting this from sells WHOLE BLOCKS for $150 . . . not sure about the heads . . . but I'm guessing they're pretty damn cheap too!!

I probably wouldn't go through Cobb as there will be a hefty tag on the services . . . see if you can find a machine shop near you that has done work on domestics. I'm sure their rates will be ALOT cheaper for headwork!!

As for valves, valvesprings and retainers, those might be a custom job as I don't think the parts from other subarus fit.

I know of a couple machine shops, but I have no basis to determine a "good" one from a "bad" one. I wouldn't even know where to ask around.

Alright. Lemme do some research on this (since I am the one who'd start this off) and get back to you guys. I guess if the guy I take these heads to does a good job, then you guys could probably send your heads off to the same shop.
