guaging interest 90-91 carbon fiber hoods

i was talking to a guy who owns this composite shop and he said he could make a carbon fiber hood for some of our cars (90-91) for around $700. i was wondering who would want to buy one of these hoods. also what kind of things would you want on the hood? would you want a rs hood scoop or just the stock hood? i'm not sure when all this would happen so there is no for sure yet.

LOL, so true boost! There was a big group buy on not carban fiber, but fiberglass hoods (?) hoods with scoops and 2.5 rs hood vents. The deal went south and through some unfortunate unforseen turn of events it kinda went sour. So...if you COULD make something happen, you just might get some buys. Out of curiousity, though, will this be paintable carbian fiber? This crowd isn't a ricer crowd and I don't know how many of htem would want to keep it looking like a carben fiber hood. I'm not sure I would.

Is carben fiber always paintable? I was under the impression that it wasn't most of the time.

If the hoods are the same... I still wouldn't be interested, lol.

Unless, of course, the scoop is molded in and everything.

$700 is pretty steep.

well if this guy's shop does make them i will make sure whoever pays for one will get them. seeing as i'm still in school i cant really go anywhere. i'm not sure about the carbon fiber being paintable, i'll ask the guy next time he comes to our shop, and bac i dont think that hood will fit on your car. 1 more question, what would you guys want the hood to look like- the stock turbo hood or the hood w/rs scoop, etc.

I'd like the vents on the front of the hood and the 2.5 rs scoop. In all honesty though, if it was the stock scoop I wouldn't mind since I'm planning on going AWIC setup anyways. I also would like to keep my car as close to the stock look as possable to keep it a sleeper. I don't mind lowring it a bit to get rid of the fender gap and putting new rims on it, but that is about all I want to do as far as flash goes. The hood I may fudge on depending on what is offered. My first priority is my exhaust right now, though. So I don't plan on dishing out 700 for a hood anytime real soon. Just FYI.

I think typically the non-paintable carbon fiber hoods have already been treated with a clear coat which prevents painting afterwards. However, you could have the person make the hoods uncoated if you're planning on painting it in the future. However, if you decide to have the thing clear coated and then want to paint it in the future, you might be able to sand it off. You're going to paint it anyway so the "look" of the carbon fiber won't be an issue.

i thought cf required some sort of additive to paint to stick to it well.. i could be wrong though...


I'd be interested if they were for the post-facelift cars.... :-p

There's always some sort of paint adhesive used, whether it be just primer or a flexible paint additive.

I wonder if you could fabricate 90-91 hoods with cups to properly hold Hella 90mm headlights. That could be so awesome.

Vikash - anything can be done, but I'd bet this guy's not fabricating - just making a mold off a supplied part. If you had the pods mounted (you do mean like rally pods, right?) I'd guess he could do it, but it would probably be more money.

Do we know anyone that could mold acrylic forms cheap? How about a group buy on exterior covers to replace the inner headlights with Hella 90s?

Is this a full carbon hood? Or is it one of the fiberglass ones wrapped in carbon cloth? Or does it use the stock metal under skins with only a carbon top?

Steve - I actually meant having the headlights built into the hood instead of on the car. If you could mount the 90mm headlights into them that would be really cool. The 90-91 models have a big weakness in the lighting department, so that could fix most of it right up.

You're probably right that these are just being molded from stock hoods, though. Also, I guess it's probably not a great idea to have headlights that swing up to point at the sky when you open the hood... I didn't think it through.

Just to be clear you mean't getting rid of the stock headlight housing completely, and putting hella's there that are formed into the fiberglass right?

Yes, that's what I meant. But I no longer think it's a good idea, since I would want the headlights to point forwards even when the hood is open. And it also might make headlight aim imprecise.
