wheel bearing?, axel?, or differential?
when i take left turns, i can hear the right rear wheel making a metal on metal grinding noise, i think it is prolly my wheel bearing, but does anyone know of any other possibilities?
A wheel bearing is a good guess, but they usually give a steady grumbling when they start to go south. If it’s sporadic you should consider a CV, only while turning could be explained by a change in suspension-and thus the axle angle. I suppose turning could explain sporadic sounds from a wheel bearing too. I could be entirely wrong but I’ve killed 4 wheel bearings and 3 drive axles and all the bearings steadily wailed for quite a while, and the CV’s popped and grumbled randomly(except for the one that exploded
see “healthy CV joint”)

I've finally been able to get my car out and actually drive it after I had work done to fix my meeting with a curb back in December. I noticed a metal on metal grinding noise coming from driver's front wheel during right turns. But its only during right turns. Speed doesn't change the noise at all.
Is this most likely my "new" wheel bearing the shop installed? I haven't jacked it up yet, but if its only during right turns, am I going to be able to notice anything when I turn it by hand? This post makes me wonder if its something else. Could it be something with the front differential or axle?
And here I was thinking I had everything sorted out.

Does anyone know how much cvaxles.com charges for shipping to Canada? I still haven't looked at the car, but I figured I'd start doing some footwork to get it fixed. Any suggestions on avoiding having to send my old axle back to them? Shipping for me would probably be ludicrous.
Anyone use Subaru for new axles? Would it be worth it for me to investigate prices from them?
And I was so happy to be driving the car again.... It so much better than the company van I've been driving.

I don't know but you can contact them and ask. Just use the 'Contact Us' tab on their website and ask how much to ship to your area.mikec wrote:Does anyone know how much cvaxles.com charges for shipping to Canada?

Well I'd get a shipping estimate and if it's to much you could just eat the core charge.
No, but it's only a phone call so it would be a shame not to at least see what they want. It might be that the money you save on shipping makes getting them from the dealer worth it.Anyone use Subaru for new axles? Would it be worth it for me to investigate prices from them?

If the sound comes from the wheel only when under pressure and increases depending on the amount of force then I bet its a wheel bearing. Sometimes the race gets pitted and the extra metal is lodged in a different location. When its small the sound only happens under load and not under normal driving.
I'm taking it back to the shop this morning. My brother wonders if they repacked it with the proper grease, as he didn't hear anything when he drove it a couple of days ago. Saturday was the first time its been on the highway since the work was done, so I think that may be the answer.
I'll let you guys know what I find out.

Took it back to the shop a week ago, and they said the wheel was rubbing in the fender well. I'm wondering if they even looked at it.
Changed back to the stock rims, and its still making the metal on metal sound.
I'm thinking about taking it to the local Subaru dealership, and explaining exactly what's gone on. Unless, of course, someone can convince me otherwise.
And I thought I had found a shop that I could trust.

What about the backing plate behind the brake rotors? Could it be bend or rusted so that it rubs on something? My sister's did that in the rear.

The bottom of the shield had a spot that was in a little closer than the rest of it. When I pulled it out, there was a shiny spot about 2 key thicknesses across. No more noise now!!

I can't believe I never thought to look at the shield when I went looking for the noise, or yesterday when I was actually looking at the rotors and changing tires.
Thanks again everyone.

I bought a driveshaft the left front one for about 90 CAD. I think carquest. But not sure. I think you can't find it chiper than that. Soon I'll have to change the right one too. And I am gonna buy it from there for sure.
