2.5L clutch kit for early Legacy tranny?

Post by strange179 »

Hi all, I just happened across this board and I'm hoping that I can get some help. I have a rather unique situation so bear with me please. I have swapped a 5MT from a '92 non-turbo Legacy into my '92 SVX. The transmission, clutch, and flywheel all came from that car. What I'd like to know is if a clutch from a 2.5L-engine equipped Impreza or Legacy will fit with this tranny and flywheel. I know the difference between the turbo ones and the n/a ones so I know that definitely won't work but I can't find any solid answer as to wether my idea will work. Specifically I'd like to get the Exedy clutch with part # 15801 which lists to fit "1997-01 Subaru Impreza, Legacy 2.5L EJ25" Here's a link to the specs for it: http://www.coximport.com/store/EX15801

If anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Jay

I believe all non-turbo clutches are interchangeable.

I can also tell you that the Beck/Arnley catalog lists the same part number for all 1997 Subaru Legacies and Imprezas for the clutch kit, for the 1.8 liter, 2.2 liter, and 2.5 liter engines.

I dont have any answers just questions.

First off, does "swapped" mean, "I hooked it up and it works"?

Second, did the NA tranny hold up to the 220 hp the SVX tranny puts out?

Thanks

I'd also be concerned about the cable clutch. There must be a reason Subaru moved to the hydraulic set up on the higher power cars.

some answers and more questions

Douglas: I've actually been driving this car with the 5MT since August of 2003. We at the SVX Network have recorded many such swaps with almost every Subaru tranny made from about '90 and up, even the new 6MT. The trannies seem to hold the power just fine. I think I've only heard of one or two breaking due to "spirited" driving and it's usually due to some sort of power shifting or the like. Btw, the factory rating for the SVX was 230hp.

Evolutionmovement: There have been swaps recorded with all three types of clutch setups and I doun't think anyone has had issues with the cable clutch simply due to it being cable actuated. Most people have said that they like the pull type clutch the best and that a stock WRX or turbo Legacy clutch will hold the power of the EG33. Most people who have use an NA-sourced tranny have used a high performance aftermarket clutch such as Exedy, ACT, or similar.

vrg3: I'd be interested to see if B/A lists that same clutch for an earlier Legacy or Impreza AWD. I've seen that some places, such as Subaruparts.com, list them all the same and other places, such as Clutch Masters lists several different part numbers. I'ts all quite confusing.

Oh, sorry, that was kind of silly information to leave out.

Yes, it does list the same part number for a 1990-1994 non-turbo Legacies, FWD or AWD. Turbos, of course, have a different part number.

Maybe some clutch manufacturers might use stronger parts for stronger engines, while others use all the same parts?

I just wanted to extend my thsnks to everyone who took the time to answer my questions. Between the info that I got here and the NAPA online catalog (the beck arnley reference made me think to look there) I have to agree that the 2.2 and 2.5 NA clutches should be the same. I'm confident enough in that belief that I'm going to order the clutch that I was looking at. BTW, if it doesn't work I'll most likely be selling it on ebay. :-D Thanks again for your quick and thoughtful responses.

It Worked

Post by strange179 »

I ordered the Exedy Clutch from the guy in Washington. Exedy Part #15801. It fit in perfectly.

The pressure plate looked quite a bit stronger than stock and the disk was full faced and a good thickness.

The engagement is a bit quick but I can slip it fairly easily. There's no shudder and, more importantly, it holds. I took the car onto a dirt road near where I installed the clutch and tested it with progressively more vigor. In the end I revved it to about 3k RPM and did my best to slip it. It surprised me as the car simply dug four little trenches in the road and took off, getting slightly sideways in the process.

Thanks again,
Jay
