I don't see how the 95 had that switched. It too has the same exact setup that we have. Physical connections (cables) all held in place by e-clips.

Rerouting the cables would require modding of A) the cable itself. The cable is barely long enough to make it to the front of the dash. And B) deletion of a few behind-dash items.

The ends simply don't justify the means. Not in my eyes at least.

what are the phiscal conections. all of the buttons and sliders seem to be electrical or internal

Cables secured by e-clips. At least that's how it was on my 95.

The levers you slide are what are connected to cables. The buttons are eletric (I guess things are switched by vacuum pressure).

Pull the unit and check it out for yourself.
