lightweight pulleys?

Post by Aaron's ej22t »

hey guys! i got a question on lightweight pulleys. do the rs or wrx pulleys fit our cars?
i know DLC has an underdrive pulley but for what subaru?
hey boostjunkie, don't you have GFB wrx pulleys?
i was looking at the subysport pulleys on imprezars.com cause they are not underdriven, they are same size as stock but just lighter.

any input? :o

Yes, I have the GFB pulleys on my car. It's a crank and alternator pulley set . . . I can't give any basis for comparison as these pieces were already on the car when I got it . . . I guess they're nice *shrug*

More is acheived by the lighter weight of the pulleys than from the size, and underdriving has some minor consequences when related to the alternator output, etc...

Impreza pulleys are the same, it's not the car, it's the engine that's important. Pretty much any EJ part fits any other EJ motor.

Therefore, the one at http://www.fastwrx.com/bilalcranpul.html should fit our cars? Also, it says that the stock pulley incorporates a "harmonic dampener". Did our cars have this? if so, how important is it? Do most of the aftermarket pulleys eliminate this?

yeah that should fit.

Yes the stock pulley has a harmonic damper, and yes your car had one.

I know on the WRX's swapping out the stock pulley produces some weird readings from the crank sensor.

But that seems to be limited to the WRX....

Would removing the harmonic damper have any detrimental effect on the engine, for example shaking and such?

anything is possible......however I've had my lightweight pulley on for a good while, and everything seems ok.

The design and configuration of the boxer motors lend's themself to not really needing too much harmonic damping.

there's been talk of bearing damage due to removal of the harmonic damper, but so far it;'s only talk. if there is any damage, it's all long term.

since I had the pulley issues I was thinking of going with a lightweight pulley. The only thing keeping me from going with one is the whole "no job" thing.
