What to do...what to do....

Post by WRXdan »

I preparing the Legacy for trans removal. I'm to the point of dropping the trans. Nice and easy so far. But I can never leave things along :? I'm going to replace some of the brittle plastic parts along with the cam belt cover. Looks like the car has been leaking oil for a long time. The underside is caked thick with gunk. But hey....that will make good road salt protection. I'm guessing the pan gasket has been leaking, it looks like it's been fixed. My debate is whether or not to pull the motor and freshen it up? With the trans out, pulling the motor is a breeze. I was thinking I should replace the valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket, and maybe valve stem seals? Thoughts? I could just rebuild the whole engine but that would add time and money to the project.

I'd look into putting a 5-speed back in, but that's just me :)

Pulling the engine and getting it all cleaned up is definitely the way to go. I hear it's tremendously easy to remove the engine and with the tranny out it would only be easier. Valve cover gaskets are a must. Plus, once everything is all cleaned up you will be able to spot where anything starts leaking in the future.
