Basically, it used to only do it when I accelerated hard, which originally led me to believe it was a heat shield or something in the exhaust. However, now it's doing it all the time, and I know it's coming from the transmission at this point.
In fact, now I'm hearing this buzzing, click noise all the time, under varied acceleration, but most times it's in 2nd gear (mostly), or at the top end of 1st and then into 2nd. Once I hit my taller, final drive gears it stops.
The buzzzing has a varied duration, but it's not usually longer than 5-10 seconds (10 seconds being on the long side).
In all other respects, the tranny is fine though: smooth, well controlled shifts under most throttle applications -although occasionally, when I really hit the throttle the tranny will downshift, upshift and then downshift again -and then settle into whatever rpm/gear range is appropriate for the type of driving I'm doing (if that makes any sense

he transmission fluid is nice and pink (I have it flushed every 15-20k thousand miles or so), doesn't smell. and there are no visible immpurities.
Also, both transfer cases have new fluid (Castrol HypoC 85W90) and are
also, in good shape.
What then, is the source of this infernal fucking noise?!
Has anyone ever experienced this or something similiar? I really can't affoard to take it into the shop (besides, there are no bonafide Subaru shops around me, and I'm fairly wary of the import shops in town.
Haynes hasn't offerd much in the way of assistance either -the info is a bit too general in terms of noise diagnosis.
I'll keep poking around NASIOC and ultimatesubaru.net, but so far I'm floudering in the dark here.
