4eat MT swap need info asap
So im on the hunt again for an SS... i was interested in the one on ebay with the broken tranny, the outside looks great, but i much rather a 5MT... how different is a FWD transmission frmo the AWD? Could my 91 FWD tranny be used in the AWD 4eat? If not and i purchase the turbo tranny from PTR if he still has it can use use most of the mechanical parts (pedals, shiter parts etc) from my 91 5MT fwd to complete the swap?
Or am i totaly crazy and should just wait? Problem is i dont have 3-4 g's to throw around at once but could work on the car week by week....
What do you guys think?

A FWD tranny won't work in an AWD car. Simple as that
The SS MT is completely different from all other BC MT's.
Expect to spend twice what you pay for the car in repairs.
I bought my car for $3400. I'm almost $4k into repairs.

that deosnt sound good... i can deal with an automatic... but i do like that 5 speed... its really got me hooked, i know someone who does transmissions and could probably get the tranny fixed for a good price but then its a matter of all the other potential problems the car might have i guess....
i just wish i could reach the guy to see the car his email seems to be invalid on ebay.
For some reason the 4eat seams to suck .. but then again i havent driven one for a few years now... last thing i hopped into was my friends 2000 eclipse rs which i dont belive is the best of cars.

so far i havent broken 1k in money, had i gone with a rebuilt/good condition tranny in the first place it'd probably be around 1500. The pedals and stuff should be the same, clutch fork, and mounts are different. I believe the shifter is the same but who knows. It's not that hard a swap at all. even the wiring is easy (so far). Just gotta have the right tools for the job.

2000 was the 3rd gen eclipse, their trannies are SHIT. Sucks, but it's true.
Automatics vary between manufacturers. The 4EAT in the Suby's aren't to bad. I drove one for 2 years, and it was berable. Not as fun as a 5MT, but still cool. I don't think I'll ever stop driving a manual tranny car. To much fun.
You'd need a new tranny and a whole shit ton of other stuff too. Hardy did the swap in an N/A, and the requirements aren't as intense. I wouldn't bother doing a 5MT swap into an SS simply because it'd be easier to buy 2 SS's and swap directly over, into a franken-SS (the best of both cars). You would basically need a whole MT-SS just so you would have all of the required parts. It'd be mad expensive to buy every part individually.

I wish i wasnt in so much debt , i really want to have a nice subaru to drive but it deosnt seem like it will happen, as it is my 91 5mt has that damn stalling problem that i ust acn figure out , and it seems like my already shot suspension has a broken strut in the rear... the repairs just seem too much to be worth it, if it was an SS i may throw in the extra overtime hours and get it togethter but i just dont feel its worth it on a L model...
I have an offer of a 95 nissan altima 5mt from y wifes father but he is one of those talkers ifyou know what i mean so i may get that car now or a year from now i dont know. Its only got about 40k on the odo and ive heard of people rebuilding the engines and putting turbo kits on it... considering its a free car in mint condition with a maintenance record i can trust i cant really beat that .... but i still want a subie.....

You may just be able to add a center diff to a fwd transmission. I thought most of it was the same ahead of it. How effective this will be, I don't know. Good thing is that if it works a matching 3.700 LSD will be easy and pretty cheap to find (as opposed to the 3.900 the turbo requires).

What do you guys thikn about swaping the turbo in to a fwd L 5mt... i could upgrade the clutch.
Are the suspension parts swappable?
I dont really like the traction of the fwd but its better than nothing..
IM all torn... dont know what to do depends what kinda deal i can get on fixing the tranny..
Anyone here sucessfully take apart an automatic tranny? This guy claims the shift solenoid is stuck.. how big of a job is that fixing/replacing?

I wouldn't want a turbo FWD car. That's a lot of stress on drivetrain components, and even worse, on traction. You SERIOUSLY limit your mod potential if you stick to FWD.

I dunno about that, there's lots of turbo 2wd cars out there. I'm sure they have stronger trannys than their na versions though, but you've also got beefier front halfshafts than your awd counterparts, dunno what else though. so take that for what it's worth.

In a way being fwd would be easier on internals as stress would be relieved through the spinning tires. I may do this briefly to tune on a 2wd dyno, but I don't know how driveable it would be.

assuming you dont power on the gas all the time you should be fine. It's pretty easy to control large amounts of power if you finesse it righ
