torq converter lock up swich

Post by azn2nr »

last year my friend wit a 86 t/a showed me this thing where you put wires conected to a swich inserted into the A nd F port of the aldl pallel thingie. you plug code readers into it. neways when you flip the swich and the torq converter stays locked up thorugh all four gears and its good for a tenth off you 1/4 mi times. ive seen it mostly on domestics but will it work for our cars?

I did this on my 88 IROC, but I burned a EEPROM instead of messing with the ALDL. I got a rougher ride because the TQ was locked all the time. Not sure how AWD will respond to this?

ciper was talking about doing this, and installing a 5mt's pedals and using the clutch pedal as the switch. I tried to install a set of pedals when i still had the auto, and the tcu is right in the way of the switch so that idea wont work without more fabrication. But anyway it shouldnt be hard just wire the switch in line with the wires that go to the tcu for duty solenoid B I believe. I think that's the lock up control. I'd check that beforehand though.

I'm pretty sure the lock up switch locks the TC when a +12V current is applied, so just a switch won't work.

How can you drive an automatic with the torque converter locked up all the time? Wouldn't the engine stall every time you brought the car to a stop?

Vikash - Ciper was talking about having a clutch unlock the TC when depressed (just have the clutch connected to a switch), then have it locked all the time while driving. He was also talking about having the thing be manually shifted. That was a cool thread :)

Phil - Yeah, I remember that... I was asking WRXdan about his IROC in my above post.

Not locked all the time, just at different times other than stock. The IROC converter unlocked at the slightest lift of the gas...not good when autoxing.
