Quick answer if possible!!!

Post by kastrix »

Hey i am leaving today on a road-trip and my A/C compressor is shot. I found a used one from a 95 legacy. the brand is the same as well as the size. My mechanic (who does not work on A/C) says all the fittings and screws are in the right place and he doesnt see why it wouldnt work.

Would this work?

The only issue is that, the compressor on the 95 is meant for r134a. Your compressor is probably originally for r12.

Whether that makes a hill of beans.....I really don't know. Do you have the part #'s off each compressor? I could try and cross-reference them.

R12 won't work in an R134a compressor, at least I don't think it will. You'll probably have to do the full conversion.

Stick with rolling down the windows. It's more fuel efficient anyways.

The compressors are mechanically pretty much the same, the model is probably Calsonic V5. I believe the main reason they are labelled with refrigerant type is that they are supplied filled with a specific type of oil. Other than that, an R134 comp. should hold to R12, given that R12 systems run at somewhat lower pressures than R134. There were some R12 compressors that supposedly had seals incompatible with R134 (not on Subaru anyway), but not the other way around to my knowledge.

This can be debated when traveling on the freeway for long distances.....

Well, it depends on how fast you're traveling... eventually you reach a speed where the increased drag of the windows being open exceeds the torque required to drive the compressor.
