Replacing my 91 wagon

Post by arracado »

So, my wife and I have decided to part with our 91 wagon, as it is approaching 200k miles, and we'd like to have something a bit newer. I really don't like the body style of the Outbacks---I prefer the traditional wagon style. What was the last year of the older wagon style, before they switched to the Outback? What should I know before buying one of these models? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it the trim on the Outback that you don't like? Why not just get a regular Legacy wagon or a GT?

1st gen went to 1994
2nd gen to 1999 (or did they got to 2000?)
3rd gen to 2004
4th gen just out now

The outback was and is still, a trim level. A standard non-outback wagon is still available, even now in the 4th gen.

Actually I think the outback was only a trim level for legacy's in 95 and it became its own model 96 and has been like that since. Though it shares the same chassis and body design, subaru classifies it as a different model. I believe it's still refered to as a Legacy outback though. but it is a different model line. Also don't forget that there is an impreza outback :)

I'll be selling it soon. I don't have the space to do a part-out right now.

What I don't like about the Outback wagons is they look kinda bubbly to me in the back, from the rear doors onwards. I like the lower profile, longer look of the regular wagons. The extra clearance is nice though, too, so I'm not totally ruling out an Outback.

well you do realize that the outback and legacy share the same body right? Are you saying you don't like the legacy wagon/legacy outback design? Cause if so thats all legs from 95-05

I had a 95 non-outback Legacy...

My math teacher had a 95 non-outback Legacy Wagon also.

The Outback was a trim level until the body redesign in 98 (I think 98?) Then it became the Subaru Outback, on a different model line than the Legacy. They did this with the release of the 3.0L H6. I'd imagine they thought it was to confusing with 3 different engine options in 4 different bodies. So they seperated the models, put the 2.2 and the 2.5 in the normal Legacy and the 2.5 and 3.0 in the Outback.

hehe, I wasnt disagreeing with the fact that there is a legacy wagon and a legacy outback. I was disagreeing with that fact that the outback was/is a trim from 96-05. Also I dont trust edmunds for info as they have quite a few things wrong there.

There is nothing to disagree with, it was the Legacy Outback until the H6 came out.

Once the H6 came out, the Outback semi-split off. Up until the 05 model year, they have been marketed as the Legacy Outback.

yes they've been marketed as legacy outbacks that's just the naming scheme, but what I'm saying is they were legacy models with outback trim in 95 only, since 96 they've been outback models based upon the legacy wagon chassis/body design

Oh, I thought you were saying the 95 wagon was ONLY available in an Outback. That DEFINATELY isn't true.

As far as the outback just being based on the legacy wagon chassis/body design, and sold under a "Legacy" title, sort of makes it a trim level. Further proving this point, the Outback isn't solely a Legacy based model, there was an Impreza Outback.

See what I'm getting at?

There was absolutely a non-Outback wagon in 95. I've seen one with my own eyes.

It wouldn't be it's own model line if it was based on 2 other model lines chassis (on the same model).

The Impreza Outback and the Legacy Outback are completely different chassis. No car company would have one model (the outback in this case) that has the chassis from 2 seperate models. More than one different model do carry the same moniker though (Yukon XL and the Suburban XL for example).

I should have gotten involved in this earlier. The Outback moniker was actually started on the Impreza as the Outback Sport merely months before the Legacy Outback came out in 1996. There were Legacy L's in 1995 with two-tone paint schemes and our Turbo wheels that looked just like Outbacks but weren't. That scheme carried over to being a Legacy Outback in 96. It was still involved in the Legacy line (read: you still could find a Legacy badge on the hatch) up until 99 when the 3rd-gens came out. The Outback no longer had the Legacy nameplate on it, and "separated" itself from the Legacy line, although it's still the same platform. And yes, there has always been a Legacy alongside the Outback. The H6 didn't actually come out until 01, too ;)

H6 came out in 01? woah, I thought it was like 98 or something!

If the Outback didn't come out until 96, then why have I seen a 95 Legacy Outback?

But the Outback wasn't the only Legacy in 95.

It would appear that the Outback was just a trim level (since it is available in the Impreza and the Legacy) until 99 when the 3rd gen's came out.
