It's possible there could be a cat stuck in the trunk. Or, you are dragging someone behind the car.

Yeah, noise details would be good =)

assuming your car is AWD (which I think all GT's were) yes.

clunk clunk

Post by professor »

Diagnosis of either of these problems is easy. Most times the CV joint is bad, the rubber boot (bellows) will be torn. That lets dirt in and they don't last long after that happens. Remember there are four to look at inboard and outboard on both sides of the car, although the outboard ones usually take the most punishment. Sometimes when they are really bad you can twist the axle and hear bad noises or feel play. CV joints usually start making noise only on sharp turns, in which case you hear clunk-clunk-clunk.

The stabilizer bar links are rubber-mounted and will look bad and have free play if grabbed with some vice grips. You can more or less assume they are bad if your car has decent miles on it. You might as well replace these anyway and see if the noise goes away. Usually it is a clunk over things like railroad tracks.

Of course a bad wheel bearing is a possibility. Normally it makes sense to replace the wheel bearing when you are in there replacing the axle/CV joints. Wheel bearings make more of a droning noise when going straight (similar to loud tires), and can make grinding noises in turns.
