Jacked up my car today hunting for......

Post by turbonator »

I jacked my car up today on the drivers side.

I was trying to track down a thudding vibration right behind me
while driving ... I thought maybe exhaust..

I found that my axle has about 1/2 an inch of play.....

Guess I need a new axle???
or what's broken?

With the wheel bolted on that hub, can push back and forth on the rim and get it to move? It sounds like a wheel bearing requires replacement, especially with that thudding vibration.

between the cv boots? that sounds about normal. assuming you're strong enough to do that. Maybe the cv joint is getting weak, I dunno

How much did it cost to replace your axles?? Did you do them all.?

I've had the half shaft go on my bimmer and this noise on the legacy sounds the same..

It's loudest when I accelerate ... And does nothing when in neutral..

Another thing is when I'm slowing down in neutral there a whining noise coming from the rear end does this mean the diff is going or could a bad half shaft make this noise..

I've found that on many makes of cars the CV joints and the wheel bearings will fail around the same time. Replacing both makes sense as you are working in the same area and it really sucks to have to go back and fix it twice. That is, if you have a proper bearing puller. As a former and current BMW owner myself I certainly know what a knocking rear CV joint sounds like, and you do, too. You are most likely right.

I suppose the whining could be the wheel bearing but more likely gear wear in the rear end or a whiney bearing in there. The wheel bearing would be more likely to get loud in turns (right turns in your case). If not the wheel bearing it may stay like that for a long time without causing any other trouble, I usually just get used to gear whine since the fix is too expensive most often. You might try new gear oil, maybe you are low ?

I'll have to take a look through the phone book here in Toronto then. Thanks!
