Huge backfire

Post by dzx »

I have my car set at the stock boost level with the 16G turbo and installed a MSD DIS2 system on it the other night. After taking my lunch break at work around 2am, i was pulling back into IBM, i slowly came around the corner in first and then stomped down on the pedal, then, when i changed to second, there came the loudest and most violent backfire i have ever seen on my car. When i looked in the mirror, there was a cloud of smoke raising in the air. It doesnt smoke now, just that one time when it backfired hella hard. Any ideas? should i be worried about this? Also i've found a little bit of oil in the inlet of the turbo when i removed the intake system to make room installing the ingition system. Could this be caused by the extra pressure put on the piston rings by the new turbo? I would install a catch can, but there are soo many hoses coming out of the heads and engine for blowby that it looks like i'd have to istall several.

What color was the smoke. It was probably just carbon or fuel if it was black.

Check compression. I bought a compression tester at Advance Auto for 24 bucks. It could be oil from a blown ring, it could be any number of different things.

Run the scan tool also.

Are you intercooled yet?

no, not intercooled yet, and i dont think it was a blown ring cause i would have bluish smoke coming out the exhaust all the time, it only happened that once. It was dark but the smoke looked black and it dissipated rapidly. I'll check the scan tool out, maybe reset my ecu since the CEL has been since it was in the shop for the first round of mods. I guess it could have just blown carbon out the tail pipe since my timing on one of the cams had been retarded for god knows how long before i found it and fixed it. The inside of the tailpipe has been nice and sooty. It was a pretty violent backfire tho.

Probably fuel. Running really rich. What's your CEL for?

Could be as simple as an exhaust leak, that caused the violent backfire. I get loud pops and bangs from the rear of my car thanks to my jacked uppipe gasket.

I have straight pipes on my car Nico, no cats. I think i do have an exhaust leak at the downpipe because i had to cut one of the bolts off with a torch when installing the TD05. I still need to replace it with some grade 9 nuts. I havent checked my CEL, just let it be. Ever soo often it would go off then turn back on after a while. I should take it to autozone and have them pull the codes. I think maybe the msd ignition system has the rev limit set low cause my engine kinda stumbles just before the redline in first gear. Probably need to reprogram it, it was used on a ford ranger before i got it.
