Starter or safety switch? Or....?

Post by Bosco »

The 92 SS has been acting up as of late...
It starts fine often enough, but lately has been getting in to a habbit of just clicking once, and not starting. Sometimes the starter drags slowly through a turn or 2 then stops. I believe just turning the key back and forth again usually starts it.
I have not been driving that car at all lately, and have never experienced it myself, I think it sounds like the starter, but I figured I'd ask here before getting in to it.
Thanks in advance for any comments.

check your battery connections, and your starter connections and ground straps for tightness and cleanliness. In fact just take them off, clean 'em up, and reinstall. if your problem persists, there is probably a dead spot on the starter motor winding. Sometimes they can soldier on a long time like that, sometimes, not.

I'd take less chances with an automatic, no jump starts available

might be the starter solenoid contacts. It's a fairly common problem, especially in the AT's

A new battery and a used starter solved my starting woes. I had your same symptoms at first and it just got worse until the replacement parts were installed.
