almost 200 miles on the rebuild...

Post by magicmike »

ok time to change the oil... I've done some searching on here for the ups and downs on using synthetic. From what I can understand it is bad to use synthetic on an old engine but ok to use synthetic on a new engine. It seems like the only differences are the cleaning agents. I was under the impression that synthetic oils were somehow better lubricants than dino oil. I did not find any info on here stressing the lubricity benifacor, if any. I am still confused lol What are your thoughts. for those who donts know, I'm running a totally rebuilt long block...

Thanks,

-Mike

I did some searching on castrols website and found this...

Question: Can Syntec Full Synthetic be used in a rebuilt engine?

Answer: In a new or newly rebuilt engine you want a certain amount of controlled wear to occur to allow piston rings to seat and the engine to "break-in." Our recommendation is to utilize conventional oil for new and rebuilt engines for your first oil change and after that you may switch to SYNTEC for superior engine protection.

Now the question is this....is 200 miles enough time for the break in?

one thing is true for sure, synthetic will stay more consistent at low and high temperatures. I've found synthetic particularly nice in the winter, as it doesn't get syrupy when freezing cold, giving better start-up and quicker flow to the heads.

Some advise against using synthetic for break-in.

If you have a worn motor or leaks, you will tend to burn more oil, or leak it with synthetic

my opinion in your case would be to stick with mineral based for a few thou, then switch to synthetic before winter sets in.
