For some reason, I smell doom on the horizon, and I want to start preparing for the worst.
So, if/when I blow this thing up, I'm going to look into some head work.
Who makes some relatively mild cams (better than stock, but not some uber-hot sticks), that will work A) for the EJ22T, and B) for a turbo application (running ~20psi)?
Also, does anyone know where I can get some Ferrea valves? Cobb want's $1000 for some valves for an EJ25. That sounds ridiculous to me (espically since stock valves are $7 (seven)). I was thinking about just running some Ferrea valves with Ferrea valve springs and Ti retainers. Build a 9000 RPM valve train to give myself some flexability with future mods.
Will the stock ECU be able to handle a slightly hotter cam than stock?
Thanks

maybe try www.raceeng.com for the valves
the OEM ecu will be able to handle even fairly agressive cams. the problem is that you'll never see the full potential of them until you get some form of a programmable system and get them dyno tuned.
you'll want to make sure they are turbo specific cams. NA specific cams have increased overlap, and that's bad for boost.

I'm not sure if anyone even makes a performance cam for the EJ22T. You'll probably have to have a custom job done. The other thing is that you'll never get 9k rpm out of the EJ22T's SOHC heads. Even with some extreme porting I don't think they'll flow enough for that kind of revs. You'll probably want to import some heads off an EJ20G or some EJ257 heads. I can't remember if I read somewhere (i-club or nabisco) that guys were somehow using the EJ257 heads without the AVCS on the EJ22T block or not (I think they were though) but I know guys are using those heads with our block.

DOHC heads would likely have cams available, too.

I highly recommend re-reading Xephyr's comments in the Sticky at the top. While Mars is talking about a set of DOHC EJ25 heads, the logic stays the same. There is no point in spending any money on new cams. A bigger turbo is going to help you make more power. Headwork is going to help you make more power. Cams will not be worth the extra money spent on them.
And I think you realize those valves from Cobb won't fit your heads, right? The valves on the EJ25's are much bigger than our valves are. But I think you were just using that as an example for price, right?
But again, I repeat the mantra, OEM is best, OEM is best. The stock valves on all the EJ series engines are quite good. Get some new valvesprings with Ti retainers, but buy a set of brand new stock valves to put in your newly ported heads.
p.s. read my newest thread. You might want to consider starting with EJ22 NA heads as they will flow better before you even Pnp them...

Matt - I was thinking of seeing how oversized valves would fit.
I want to know if a set of EJ257 valves would fit and just how much head work would be necessary to make the larger valves fit. OEM EJ257 valves would likely do well. Mmmm Sodium Filled.
