Difference between United States and Canadian turbos

Post by THAWA »

Aside from the Manual seatbelts, daytime running lights, and the speedo being in KM's with Miles as the smaller (reverse of what we have). Are there any differences between canadian models and united states models? Searching has told me nothing. Is the ecu any different?

Nothin I dont think, other than differnent options when purchased brand new. For example Leather interior was not an option for any Canadian 1st gen Legacy.

The ECU's not different. The wiring harness should be the same as non-California US ones.

I think at least some 92-94 Canadian models have extra reflectors attached to the front corner lamps.

There are some minor wiring differences I have run into from scanning the FSM's, but nothing too huge.

Ya those reflector stickers were a canadian recall. But they come off too easily :D Instant clear corners.

do you remember what they are, or what they are related to?

Mark,
Have you noticed whether the signals are then visible from the sides? I've always wondered why we got them and the US didn't.

Also, aren't the doorlocks different? I seem to remember my 91 owner's manual saying something about US cars being able to unlock just the driver's door, or all the locks, while the Canadian cars only unlock all of them at once.

I'm curious... What's different about California cars when it comes to the wiring harness?

I don't remember everything off the top of my head, but I did notice there is some difference in the cruise setup for the automatics. I think there may be headlamp wiring differences too. I'd have to look more closely to find all of them. I don't think the differences are huge, whatever they are. If you look at the cruise control scans on my swap page, you can see the differences in the canadian models.

Yes the US models, you could unlock just the driver's door, or all the doors.

well I'd expect the headlamp wiring to be different as canada has DRL's, but cruise eh? The cruise system is separate from everything else right? or does it take info from the ecu?

mikec - The California engine harness has a particular pin grounded to signal the ECU that's it on a California car.

The cruise system is mostly independent... It looks from the diagrams in Josh's writeup that the differences in wiring have to do with power and detecting shifting or something... I bet the differences seen in the cruise diagrams actually have something to do with the DRLs.

Hardy, I'm curious -- what made you bring this topic up?

getting a canadian turbo and wanted to be sure there wasn't anyhting that's going to mess up with the wiring. Plus I was always curious about it.

Hmm... probably holds the timing and fueling back for emissions. Wiring that to a switch might make for some performance gains....?

I haven't tracked down exactly what it does, but go ahead and cut the "Jurisdiction ID" wire if you wanna give it a try.

I dont think my car has DRL's. Im able to turn the headlights off, and on with the switch.

I'm not sure about that. It's possable, but I kinda doubt it. California is very particular about emissions and I know that if you bring a car into California it has to pass some sort of rigorious test. I'm not surprised that the cars would identify themselves as CA cars, I seriously hope there isn't any dabilitating affects. I really doubt there are any.

I do know there are places in the code where the ECU does some things differently if it's in California mode. I don't know exactly what it is though.

It may just be tweaked to pass California's particular tests or something.

Debilitating is a strong word. Being in California mode definitely isn't debilitating to your car's performance.
