97 LOBW Trany/speedo problem

Post by chillichar »

The car is at a shop and the check engine light (CEL) codes say it's the speed sensor, but the mechanic goes on to say there are two of them, one being inside the tranny and unavailiable as a replacement (or unlisted or something). The first thing that happened was the CEL came on a couple months ago, I didn't really have time to deal with it and it was running fine till the speedo went out, maybe a month ago, then two weeks ago after driving 3hrs at hwy speeds, I feel the transmission acting funny, like it jumped out of gear or wouldn't shift. I baybied it and it has been getting me around, but if I give it alot of gas to where it would normally downshift, it pops in and out of whatever gear it's in. That's the best I can describe it anyway. I'm kinda figuring I need a new transmission, but if it is a $200 speed sensor or something less than $1000 that would really help. The thing is if I have the guy replace it and it turns out to be in the wiring or I need a tranny, I'm just out more $$. I know how to work on cars pretty well, but don't have the tools, space, or time to do anything major. I posted on some other suby message boards today, so maybe someone will have an idea. It's a 1997 Legacy Outback Wagon Limited with an Automatic Transmission. ...maybe for sale..;)

THANKS!!!
