AT VS MT

Post by zazzn »

Hey all,

I've been doing some searching on the site... Obviously we all know a 5 spd will last longer then auto if not beat. But... What I'm wondering is what the stock Auto can handle powerwise before the clutch packs start to let go?

Also the 5 SPD what cant the stock clutch take? And what about hard AWD launches... How do these transmissions stand up to both? I heard the 5 SPD's are Power eaters...

I'm in the market for a Turbo legacy but unsure what I should look for.. 5 spd or auto.

Thanks in advance for the replys..

In the 5spds, typically it's not the clutch that goes.....it's the gears if you really have some power.

The autos, again, I don't think the clutch packs are going to go. Heat is the big killer of the AT's. So if you run some big power on the at's, get a cooler for it, and run synthetic fluid.

Why do the gear die? Do they break form stress or is it the stress of launching the car?

As for the Auto's does anyone know what the stock clutch packs hold?

it's easy enough to buy a B&M trans cooler.. I'll get a big monster to keep her cool...

Either the input shaft gets chewed up or a random gear. The input shaft breaks from retards dumping the clutch like its a 2wd drive car, the tires don't break loose, so something else does. The gears are a little mysterious. It's a combination of a gear box that flexes under high hp loads that lets the gears come out of perfect alignment... and part of it is people putting too much power down before everythings fully engaged IIRC.

and how much power would be too much power... As I said 300 BHP... maybe 300 awhp with some race gas. (of coruse with all the supporing mods)

if you aren't stupid, the tranny is fine. if you are, then there are a couple of different gearsets that you can get that are much stronger to take drag racing-like abuse.

and 300whp is equivalent to ~400 crank hp in an AWD car.

Any links to palces that make gear sets...?

Also anyone know when the stock clutch packs start to slip? I'm really thinking I should go auto because if I ever get in to a race (which I do alot) I'm not nice... I race to win or break ;)

So I fall in to the stupid catagory.
