Thinking about going to an EJ20G, what do you think?
I might be able to get a low mileage EJ20G for a good price. I haven't been able to find an EJ22T for less then a grand shipped. One place quoted me $750 w/ a six month warranty but they seem a little shadey. The one I'm really looking at is $1400 shipped W/45k miles and a 3 month warranty. I don't want to spend that much and I can get this EJ20G for $800 shipped. It has the AWIC on it and the VF10.
So, what do you all think?

what did you do to your motor. because if the short block is still good than you should just rebuild with badass heads. but if you decide on a new motor i would go with the 95 wrxs ej20g.

He's looking at a 200ps closed deck EJ20G from a Legacy 2.0GT like the one I have. I forget your exact set up, but you should definitely hit higher than that number even on the stock ECU.azn2nr wrote:what did you do to your motor. because if the short block is still good than you should just rebuild with badass heads. but if you decide on a new motor i would go with the 95 wrxs ej20g.
As I have communicated through PM, I would totally get this engine. Use your stock engine wiring harness on it with your coil pack and wasted spark ignition. Including moving the harness over, the whole thing will take a maximum of 30hours of labor for one person. If Vikash helps, it will take you guys the weekend.
And then, when money permits, get your 22T block rebuilt and swap it over in place of the 20G block. You then have the advantage of fairly large port DOHC heads along with bigger injectors. All that is left is to get a TD05 and upgraded engine management. But that is for down the road. For now, that block will keep you running.
Have you talked to Super Rupair in Boulder about an EJ22T longblock? Last time I checked they had one for $800+ freight that was missing the turbo and a few other bits...

The EJ22T for $1400 shipped has the 45K miles. The EJ20G has around 60-70K miles.scottzg wrote:dohc and 45k miles for a 10% reduction in displacement? Hell ya!

#4 let go. It may just be rings but I suspect either piston or cylinder wall damage too. The old EJ22T will be rebuilt slowly for the future.azn2nr wrote:what did you do to your motor. because if the short block is still good than you should just rebuild with badass heads. but if you decide on a new motor i would go with the 95 wrxs ej20g.

I have a removed snorkus, K&N panel, Deadbolts Monster TD05H-16G with Black Xtreme ceramic on the turbine housing and regular gray ceramic on the compressor housing, CES Racing up-pipe (CES Racing cross-pipe will be going in with the swap), Saab 900 TMIC (probably convert to the AWIC during the swap), Joe-P MBC, VRG3 Phase II FCD, and a Full CES Racing 3" catless TBE with Hyper Coated (ceramic) DP (DP03). I think that's all my power mods but I might be forgetting something.Matt Monson wrote:I forget your exact set up, but you should definitely hit higher than that number even on the stock ECU.azn2nr wrote:what did you do to your motor. because if the short block is still good than you should just rebuild with badass heads. but if you decide on a new motor i would go with the 95 wrxs ej20g.
Did you PM me or Vikash? I didn't get a PM from you.As I have communicated through PM, I would totally get this engine.
Wow, really, you think it'll take that long? I've never done an engine swap before but I was hoping I'd get out a little quicker then that.Use your stock engine wiring harness on it with your coil pack and wasted spark ignition. Including moving the harness over, the whole thing will take a maximum of 30hours of labor for one person. If Vikash helps, it will take you guys the weekend.
Totally, that's the reason I'm considering doing this. And then, when money permits, get your 22T block rebuilt and swap it over in place of the 20G block. You then have the advantage of fairly large port DOHC heads along with bigger injectors.

Well I got the TD05 already but I will definitely be looking into engine management on down the road. All that is left is to get a TD05 and upgraded engine management. But that is for down the road. For now, that block will keep you running.
No but I've been in contact with a lot of yards. I've had some promising prospects for an EJ22T but most are either more money, have missing components or high miles.Have you talked to Super Rupair in Boulder about an EJ22T longblock? Last time I checked they had one for $800+ freight that was missing the turbo and a few other bits...
One yard in particular was very tempting but as soon as I asked for the VIN# of the car the motor came out of so I could verify the mileage it miraculously sold locally that very day! Hahaha. Shady, shady.

Matt - I was thinking about this on my flight today. Swap an EJ20G and hope for the best with the EJ22T rebuild. I was gonna do the EJ20G until I could get my Ej22T rebuilt when that fateful day comes.
I will miss the torque, I know that, but I can also boost the SHIT out of that engine and not care.
The best thing about the EJ20G would be the DOHC.
I wouldn't want to be "just another EJ20G car" though, so the EJ22T would definately have to go back in.
It would just go in much more badassed. And possibly with DOHC heads

A build for who?
I HAVE been thinking about what to do on the day the music dies.
Then just figure out what I want to do. If I could get an EJ20G for cheap, I'd like to do that, swap it, build the bottom end of the EJ22T (known from hereon out as Betsy), and pull the EJ20G and do a head swap. Then SAEMS and button it all up.
It would probably just become a monster SOHC build though, as that's less costly.

Ya, I know. That's what I'm worried about too. One of the other interested parties was in his home state and mentioned picking it up so he may be talking with him in hopes of not having to ship the motor.

Matt,
Let's see if I can reply without quoting. I don't have the patience to partial quote a bunch of stuff.
I thought you had a TD05, but wasn't sure. That will be a great turbo to run on the 20G, and as mentioned it has bigger injectors.
But why on earth would you eventually do a SOHC build? Those DOHC legacy heads are good heads. They are rocker arms w/HLA that can rev to 7800rpm. The only maintenance they will ever need is HLA service. And they are big port heads that flow a lot. I see no reason to ever do anything to those heads once you own a set.
Vikash and I pm'd back and forth a bunch yesterday. I just assumed he was downloading my comments to you.
As for time for the swap? I always exaggerate timelines to noob time. It took me 10 hours to pull my first subby engine. Now I figure I could pull one in 6. And like I said, two guys will cut the time way down. 2 guys could pull one in 3-4 hours.
And the unknown is how long switching the harness over will take. I would guess it would take me 5-6 hours, but threw out 10 just to be on the safe side. But my comments about 2 guys taking a weekend assumes 6-8hour days like I work on my car. I am not into that 12-20hours straight. Being clean and sober, I no longer have the staying power of beer and white powder drugs to get a build done in a day.
So, how does 15-30 hours sound?
lastly,
If the guy sold the block, not to worry. There are a ton of these blocks available. That block, like mine, came from Nippon Motors in CA. As I mentioned on NASIOC, I have done business with them repeatedly in the last 5 years.
http://www.nippon-motors.com/Performance%20Engines.htm
The engine runs $650 plus freight. If he sold it already, freight will probably add $100 to the price he was selling it at, but you can get another one of these. The funny thing is they sell these engines for $100 more on their E-bay account of Engines-R-Us than if you order direct via phone or e-mail...

I personally think you are taking a very pessimistic viewpoint to your motor. I would just rip it apart and see if the block was damaged (which I highly doubt), and then yeah, get a new one. Otherwise throw some new rings in there and do a basic rebuild. Worry about the monster engine build down the line.

Myself along with I do believe Vikash would be more than willing to loan him a car for a week or two if he needs to get something together.
I guess what I am getting at is don't spend big money on a "temporary" engine. That seems to be money down the drain. Drop in a NA EJ22 and rip the other block apart. Rebuilding the turbo engine could be done with the money saved from trying to buy a "temporary" turbocharged shortblock.
Sometimes you just have to go without boost. It sucks. I haven't driven my Sport Sedan for over a month now. Once the new heater core is pressure tested, then everything starts going back in. But until then I get joy out of beating people with the Hatch who didn't know we were racing.

Huh? I never said I would do a SOHC build up, I think that was Phil. What I was saying is that I would build it up Morgie style. Morgie swapped on the DOHC to the EJ22T block, went with forged pistons and a slight bore/displacement increase too IIRC. But ya, eventually I would put the DOHC's on the EJ22T block.Matt Monson wrote: But why on earth would you eventually do a SOHC build? Those DOHC legacy heads are good heads. Cool. I've never pulled one so who knows, maybe it will take me ten hours. I just hope not.As for time for the swap? I always exaggerate timelines to noob time. Hahaha, cool. 15-30 hrs sounds sweet. I know it always takes longer then one thinks to do almost anything and that you were being generous in your estimate. Hell, it'll probably end up taking me twice that! And the unknown is how long switching the harness over will take. Super Rupair never contacted me about the inquiry I did on an EJ22T last night on their website.
The seller finally got back to me and the local guy is thinking about buying the motor and he wants to sell it to him to aviod shipping. If it falls through I'm next in line and am going to probably buy it though unless I find a different motor before then.
