My car is actually parked. I haven't been able to drive it for about two weeks.
William- The problem is that I don't have hardly any free time and I need to get this fixed. I don't want to pull and swap motors a bunch of times. The EJ20G will allow me to take my time with the EJ22T rebuild. Plus, then I'll have an AWIC, the DOHC's, bigger injectors and can sell the EJ20G short block when I'm done with it.
The N/A thing really isn't an option for me because if the car is running then the wife will drag her feet on fixing the EJ22T and I'll be without boost WAY too long!

Ok, the local guy fell through. I'm looking for a couple final affirmations here about buying it. Tell me it's ok...

Hehehe, I see what you're getting at...
Hey, 2 people voted no. Can the no vote people check in and express why they voted no? I think William may have been one and he expressed why but who's the other. Come on, fess up.

Well, that's what everyone thought when I said that I thought #4 went in the first place. People thought I was being a hypocondreact (spelling?) about my car and that it couldn't be piston or ring damage. My car will blow exhaust out the oil dipstick tube at an alarming rate. The amount of exhaust makes me think that it may be more then just the rings. I think there is either a hole in my piston or the cylinder wall is damaged. Plus I'm afraid that there may be metal particles throughout the motor.Brat4by4 wrote:I personally think you are taking a very pessimistic viewpoint to your motor. I would just rip it apart and see if the block was damaged (which I highly doubt), and then yeah, get a new one. Otherwise throw some new rings in there and do a basic rebuild. Worry about the monster engine build down the line.
I don't have time to do a complete tear down and rebuild. With the kids and my job (which I'm soon to be pulling 60 hr weeks ) it's really hard to have much time for anything. The swap alone is going to tax me badly.
Plus, I want the AWIC, bigger injectors and heads from the EJ20G!

This is another EJ22T that blew cylinder 4 when boosted too high:

That particular engine looks like it'll need a new piston and will also need to be bored out slightly.
Why have we been worrying about cylinder 3 all these years?

Can I vote twice? It seems to be the trend here in Colorado. They caught one guy who was registered to vote 5 times!
The reason #4 is an issue on these engines (WRX's included) is the fuel rails. The placement and bends on the delivery to #4 make it get shorted a little bit and the most likely candidate for detonation...

That's trizzles block from his RS, isn't? He tried to sell me that block back in February before I found my junkyard block. He wanted $800 for it because he had bought it new in '03!vrg3 wrote:This is another EJ22T that blew cylinder 4 when boosted too high:

I'll fess up... I think that it would be wiser to find a good EJ22T, as in get one with low miles on it, even if it does have stock turbo and such. You now have a very reliable engine with tons of potential in your car. If you want a bigger turbo, there is now the new clocked 05's for our legacy's. Buy one and have it installed at your mechanic if your time is really short. Since it's made for our cars it shouldn't take an experience mechanic to swap it out. You can probably find an IC and get that put in a reasonable amount of time. Then done the road when you do have time go ahead and do the heads and rails. If you are going to be really busy for an extended amount of time then why not just get the EJ22T to start with and have the shop do some things if you want more power quickly. I've got a good ole' NA FWD so this is just my humble opinion.

The problem is that for one with low miles, shipped, is about $600 more then the EJ20G that I'm probably getting.skid542 wrote:I'll fess up... I think that it would be wiser to find a good EJ22T, as in get one with low miles on it, even if it does have stock turbo and such.
I already have an EJ22T, it's just got a blown #4.You now have a very reliable engine with tons of potential in your car.

I have a removed snorkus, K&N panel, Deadbolts Monster TD05H-16G with Black Xtreme ceramic on the turbine housing and regular gray ceramic on the compressor housing, CES Racing up-pipe (CES Racing cross-pipe will be going in with the swap), Saab 900 TMIC (probably convert to the AWIC during the swap), Joe-P MBC, VRG3 Phase II FCD, and a Full CES Racing 3" catless TBE with Hyper Coated (ceramic) DP (DP03).
So, I already own a '92 SS 5mt. It's modded fairly extensively and the #4 cylinder in my EJ22T let go. I'm putting the EJ20G in and am slowly going to rebuild my EJ22T.
I also do my own work.

Even a short block swap would be a weekend job or a long block in a day. Either way. The EJ20G would be nice anyway and make it easier to go 2.2 DOHC like you said later on. I'm wondering about doing the same thing to get some DOHC heads.

What makes you all think an EJ20G has bigger injectors? I spend as much time as I can on the RS Liberty forums and they have 370cc injectors. That was the first place I looked for upgrading my injectors and guess what, they don't have any cheap easy upgrades, just like us.
I'd be looking for a vf12 on one, it's bigger, vf10's came on the auto's. But you have a td05 so this is for anyone else looking at the same swap. I've considered it for a while and have done some talking to the Liberty guys about it. If I decide not to get a stand alone I'm going to do the same swap. They get up to 200whp with exhaust+boost, the simple stuff we have done to our cars. I'd also look at getting the ECU for it, it should have the same plug, you might have to change a few of the pins etc. but it would be better than running it on our crappy ECU.

Hmmm, are you sure? I thought they had 440cc injectors on the JDM EJ20G.-K- wrote:What makes you all think an EJ20G has bigger injectors? I spend as much time as I can on the RS Liberty forums and they have 370cc injectors.

Take a look at my conversion thread. It is more than just a couple of plugs moved. You actually don't need to move any plugs. But,you need to source a 4 channel ignitor for use with the wasted spark ignition and rewire the car accordingly. Not super hard, but not really worth the trouble unless you started with an NA car to begin with...-K- wrote:I'd also look at getting the ECU for it, it should have the same plug, you might have to change a few of the pins etc. but it would be better than running it on our crappy ECU.

Well, it looks like I won't be getting the EJ20G I was looking at. The deal was going ahead fine until we started discussing shipping, then the guy fell off the earth. I haven't heard from him in over two weeks and I've been waiting money in hand.
2 PM's, 2 e-mails and a post in his for sale thread have produced zero response.
This asshat lead me on....

Matt- I just noticed your post. Which motor are you talking about, the EJ20G or EJ22T? PM what you're looking for price wise. The shipping costs are what have been keeping me from getting a motor from anywhere that far out west. I'm looking at bottom line. It would be to 17701 if you want to add then into your asking price.
