Need to buy a helmet

I need one for my novice attempts at rally-x. What do you guys think? I was thinking an open face bell type for like around 200 bucks. Any thoughts?

While the Open Face Helmets look super goofy sometimes, I always choose to wear one when possible because there isnt a single piece in front of me to mess up my vision. Plus they arent as hot.

Our local SCCA sanctioned events require Snell 90 SA or SM. Next year requirements will change to Snell 95, making the Snell 90 helmets obsolete. SA is rated for automobile use, SM is rated for motorcycle use, but in the mild autox and rallyx applications the SM is acceptable. SA is typically more expensive, and not usually available at motorcycle shops. Check your local events to confirm their requirements. A proper helmet is required to pass tech inspection. Loaner helmets are sometimes available, but you'll most likely be sharing with someone else. That means tracking down the helmet before each of your runs, and dealing with someone elses sweat and stink.

Open face is great for rallyx and autox. I went to a local motorcycle shop and found an HJC FG3 on clearance for $70 or so. I think it may have been on the shelf for a year or so, and it had a slight scuff on it so they marked it down pretty cheap. It has Snell 2000 and DOT certifications, so it will be good for a few years. Have someone at the shop help you get one that fits properly.

You should easily be able to find something much cheaper than $200, unless you want SA, or something really fancy.

I have found that the more they cost the better they feel on my head. I have a MC so I have spent some time in a helmet. I think a good fit is the most important thing to look for, (after the snell #)keep it on for 5-10 minutes and see if there are any pressure points on your head. It should be quite snug but not be painful. I have found that different brands and sometimes models have a different shape, try to find one that fits your head. I'd say $200 would get you a good helmet. If it was for a MC I'd spend a little more. One last thing to after you have found a good helmet is check out a MC magazine and call some of the places that have helmet ads. You might get the same helmet a lot cheaper just make sure you know the model # and size.
