You wouldn't lose any oil out of the diff.
Just the transmission
I didn't read michael's post too closely and didn't see he mentioned that.
The rear diff mounts to a plate that sticks out the front of the diff.

Okay, I didn't know if the oil would come out the rear diff or not.
If you don't want to trash your rear wheel bearings, yes you should put something in the rear hubs that you can tighten down on, and dummy CV joints would be ideal.
