How do you tip?

do you all know what the hourly wage is for tipped employees in your state?

here in ND it is 3.45

in SD it is 2.50

in MN it is 5.75

holy crap!

Whats the cost of living like out there? The min wage here is 180% more than in south dakota!

in utah its verry similar to sd. lucky for me i get paid a buttload more than that because im the manager.

these states have legislation that allows the businesses to pay a certain percentage less than min. to tipped employees. plus we have to work over 40 hours in a week to get OT. if i remember right you guys in CA get OT for anything over 8 hrs. in a day.

CoL is pretty low here. but it is rising a little faster than the wage right now.

we also are somehow magically exempt from the 15 minutes of break tim rule.

I don't know what the average is in VA for tipped employees. I started out at $2.13 and now I'm up to $2.18, if I stay for another 15months I'll eventually make $2.33.

I try and tip well, but what I feel obligated to pay can drop pretty quickly. Something that’s always stuck with me from my time working at an Ice Cream shop in Ft. Collins (don’t laugh..it’s a cool place), is the kind of tips I received from different “classes” of customers. There were these two usual customers and their families that would come in. One Father and Son would roll up in a Porsche Turbo and talk down to us and be a pain in the ass. But they tipped pretty well, so he got service with a smile. This other Father Son combo walked in, because they didn’t have a car, always split something and also tipped pretty well. Knowing who tipped truly as thanks for good service, and who thought they were throwing coins at a monkey most definitely determined the level of service.
