cam wrench

Post by patcal »

I have a noise inside my timing cover that sounds like a bearing going bad. I am going to pull the belt off this weekend & check out the parts. I understand a chain wrench will hold the cam sprockets in place while you loosen the attachment bolts. I do not have the special subaru wrench #499977700. Will that also work to rotate the camshaft & crankshaft? Thanks.

If it's SOHC, just get a strap wrench. It'll work fine.

If you have an impact wrench, you won't even need a strap wrench. I got mine for $15 at Walmart, if plug into the cigarette lighter and works magic. I have taken apart 3 engines with this thing to date...

I couldn't squeeze my impact wrench in there with the radiator still on there.

I didn't feel like draining the radiator. Plus at the time I was still automatic, and those atf lines are a bitch.

I had the cam tool anyway....so it really didn't matter.

Or you could do it the lazy way. Leave the timing belt on and if manual shove it in 5th, if auto shove something in the flex plate.
