Replacing/fixing sunroof seal on 1991 Sport Sedan?

Post by DeusExMachina »

I've noticed lately there's a wet spot on the front passenger side corner of the roof where the sunroof is. I pulled it back and looked in there, and the whole seal at the corner is torn away.

Any way to replace the seal? Or fill it in with silicone or something?

sunroof "seals" are not really, they are there to keep lots of crud and huge amounts of rain out of the hole, and to cut wind noise. The sunroof has a channel all round connected to drain tubes. If you are taking on water, either one of the tubes has come loose, or the tubes are clogged and thus do not drain. Unfortunately clearing tubes is not easy, unless the plug is right up at the top. You can try a little bit of flexible wire or gentle air, but be careful or you'll blow the tube off the fitting.

I was told by designers at a company that makes sunroofs for Ford and GM that the drains should be sufficient to remove all of the water even if the "seal" is entirely missing.

This info is general as I do not have a sunroof on my Subie :( . I'm sure someone here can elucidate the routing of these tubes and the difficulties entailed in clearing or reconnecting them.

I don't know..seems to convenient that the only side to have a broken seal would have a drain clog. All thats seperating the cabin from the outside is that rubber.

Trust me. That rubber is not the cause of your leaking. Do a search on sun or moonroof and you'll find the thread talking about fixes for it. Part of the problem is that the sealant that holds the actual sunroof mechanism to the roof panel gets old, dries out, and sucks water into the cabin like a sponge. The problem is that the only way to fix it properly is to remove the entire headliner and reseal it.

I'm gonna try repairing the seal (because it should be repaired anyway) and go from there.
