Took about 14 hours this time. This was from parking and jacking up, to lowering the car and driving off.
This is cumulative time though, not straight through. And also doesnt include driving to the cylinder head shop and parts stores, just the basic working time spent upon the engine.
I pulled the engine and all parts off on Wednesday (Nov 24). Nov 26th I dropped off the cylinder heads and soaked and cleaned the pistons. On Monday I reinstalled the pistons. Today I reinstalled everything and dropped the sucker in and drove off!
Next time around I plan on having EVERYTHING available and see if I can do it in a day (a long day).
This rebuild included new clutch ($200OEM Subaru), new rings ($44) and rebuilt heads ($150). Gasket set was $107, rear main seal ($8), and misc $30ish. So about $550 for parts.
I did end up with quite a few extra parts because I didnt reinstall a few brackets and so forth. I ended up with only about 2 parts that I know should be somewhere but cant figure out where! But it still runs so who cares!
3'rd engine rebuild this year, faster than ever.

Next time, leave off a few more parts, maybe you can get it down to 11 or 12 hours!douglas vincent wrote:I ended up with only about 2 parts that I know should be somewhere but cant figure out where!
Seriously, I think its cool that you have the time, equipment, space, and opportunity to dig into that deeply.
Rock on.

That's just an extra rod bearing - don't worry about that.

So much easier to pay someone to do it.
Just new seals though. Unless your springs and valves are shot, no reason to not reuse them, especially at $7 per valve or whatever they cost.
