Watch out Art...

Post by BAC5.2 »

I was at a meet with a friend in a modded STi.

He's got your average exhaust mods (down and up pipes), crank pulley, and intake. A mild mod, but modded all the same.

We decided we wanted to see just what old school was all about.

SO, we determined that we wouldn't launch, no sense in either of us breaking something expensive on a launch.

We rolled, hit it, and a funny thing happened....

He didn't pull.

Through the top of 3rd gear, he didn't pull more than 1/2 a car. He ran a 12.7 IIRC.

I was in utter shock when we got out of the cars. I could not believe what had just happened. He was faster, but he said he was scared. He said that if we had launched, I would have been dead even with him and I would have maybe even been a little faster.

That was incredible. Maybe I'm closer to my goals than I thought....

Oh, and this was actually not done on the street. It was done on private property with the permission of the owners.

Sweet.

Hehehe, right on Phil. 8)

Remember my buddy Eric with the silver '05 STI that was at the F&S and Shootout? He and I got on it hard that day on the way down to the F&S at that light on 15 S. and he was just behind me (single lane). He said he had to get off it just a tiny bit at the top of 2nd and 3rd. He's stock but I was still stoked about it. :)

If we can get just a bit more fuel and a larger i/c just think of what we'll be able to do.

That saab intercooler your running if your still running it looked really small to me. So replacing that would probably be an improvement.

With stock fuel injectors and management, front mount, and vf23 Kelley said he was pulling away from his sti in his legacy. He may have had a different ecu, though. So that could be a difference. STill, that's pretty freaken burly. Nice job Phil!

im not at all suprised at this. i makes me want a 16g and i hope that the 39 will yeild similar results.

i was at a subaru meet when a kid in a 93 gc with a ver2 swap was dead even with a wrx wagon that had a 20g and a evo. pretty cool stuff.

and if anyone knows where to get used 16gs let me know. i want to do a comparison.

Your friend is absolutely right, Phil. From a roll, our STis aren't exceptional accelerators. From a dig, he would have gotten quite a bigger jump on you.

Still. . . VERY impressive results!

I think he was saying his friend thought the legacy would have maybe beaten him from a dig not that the sti would have eaten him.

Perhaps. . . but that would run contrary to the STi's characteristics. Teh STee almost always has the advantage from a dig.

I don't know Art. Short gears on the Sti would hurt it. I can launch at just as high an RPM as an STi can, and I've got just as wide and sticky tires as the STi. The STi's slightly smaller turbo and shorter gears would have led me to believe that from a roll on-boost run, I would have been spanked. He DEFINATELY spooled up faster, but once I was in boost, and snagged 2nd, it was dead even from there.

Impressive run, IMO. I've never heard more "total sleeper" comments than after that run.

I've got a few aces up my sleeve for the spring time, just you guys wait!

You ARE running a larger turbo, though, Phil. It only makes sense that once yours spools, it's going to spew out more power than the STi's stock snail. The fact that the STi's spools just a tad quicker means SQUAT from a roll. This is why so many STis are getting beaten by SRT4s from a roll.

You're right about the short gearing. . . the STi's 6-speed was designed for driving. . . not drag racing. This is the major reason why the Evo with its 5-speed (in 2004) almost always edged-out the STi in the 1/4 mile. I just worry a bit about your transmission if you're getting on it while shifting. Many WRXs blow theirs from upping the power to even the STi's stock levels. I know you've done other mods. . . just can't remember what you've done to the clutch and tranny. You've got your little beast going fast. . . I'd hate for you to start a thread about your transmission.

At any rate. . . until you dyno your car, it's really going to be hard to tell just how effective your turbo upgrade is, overall. I'm VERY interested to see for myself! ;)

see this is why i want to do a side by side. all the reports i get are that the 16g runs out of steam at the top but has the mid range advantage while the 39 has less mid but more top range.

From a dig (0-60') a HOT car is 1.7 sec. I was pulling 2.003 (and have slips to prove it) when running NA with a 50-60 hp nitrous shot boost. Thats less than 200 chp max. With a bad clutch. So I think our cars can be super sleepers even with minor hp boosts.

Damn I want a good clutch! I am tired of smelling the clutch when wanting to join traffic.!

Who has told you this? My 16G pulls hard to redline, and holds boost to redline.

Doesn't the sti rev higher? I got spanked by a girl in one when my car was stock. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get next to one since i finished my last stage of mods. I did have a wrx floor it next to me not that long ago, as soon as I stepped on the gas it kinda looked like he was going in reverse.

Has anybody else noticed second seems to pull the hardest? Or is that just me?

It pulls hard cause you have 4.111 gears. My brothers car is a beast as soon as the clutch engages in 2nd and 3rd. It feels totally different than mine. It's almost like the car is launching in those gears. It just wants to go!

I'm really curious how your car must react with those gears and some mods. I know that stock, its pretty impressive.

Second and Third pull like a mother.

I want to go 4.11's one of these days. Damn the gas mileage, I just wanna whup up with a short final drive. That would KILL in the corners, and would probably make the roll into boost a lot less dramatic. Hmm, improved off-boost drivability AND still killer.

Anyone know how hard it is to swap a front diff? I wonder what our gears would feel like with 4.11's....

All I know is that his car drives very differently than mine did stock for stock.

His car seems to pick up and go quicker than mine ever did. First gear is very short. I'm betting that once modded you'd shift to second before you started practically. hehe

I know yours is a beast Phil, I have NO doubts of that. I'm just saying that stock, my brother's car surprises me. I'm REALLY curious how it would do with an exhaust and some mods.
