L33t m0d! + 15hp! (emblem replacement)

Post by scottzg »

This is pretty straightforward and simple, but i figured since i had the pictures, i would put a friendly faq up for all the kiddies.

My car never had a rear trunklid emblem (says: legacy L awd), so in order to be left alone by chain controls i had stuck a red one off a wagon on my car. This thing looked out of place, so 2 years later i picked up the correct one. Unfortunately, i scuffed the silver backing with my knife removing it. Here's how i fixed it, or you could make your emblem black or sti pink or whatever you want.

1) take the emblem, and pull all the foam off by rubbing.
2) Go to your subaru dealership and order "50 grit sidewalk" subaru part# 245745767.
3) rub back of emblem gently on sidewalk gently until silver is gone. The raised chrome lettering will be unaffected.
Image
4) Hit with a good douse of clearcoat to smooth out backing.
Image
5) paint your desired color. I was thinking of leaving it clear, but opted against it and made it silver again.
Image
6) silicon glue (rubber cement, superglue) emblem back.

Car has less turbo lag, and i can tell its faster because i hit 50mph at only 2400rpms now.

This leet mod should add about 50hp right?

That emblem mod is a classic. On a black car i'd keep them clear, but might be hard to see on a white car.

Just curious... What are chain controls? and why do they not leave you alone without an emblem?

In the Sierra mtns, when it snows and they dont have the road ploughed, sometimes they require you to put on chains if you dont have 4wd and mud+snow tires. Us californians can't drive sensibly in the snow, so we need big brother to hold our hand through it.

wait, wait wait.. 50 grit sidewalk? Do you mean just rub that piece on the sidewalk
or is that an actual FHI part number? I hope it was a joke. : D

Haha, yeah, chain patrols.
Around here, people freak out when it rains, and we're supposed to be THE Rainy City!

In Seattle people drive 5 mph under the speed limit, until it rains, then they drive 15 over the speed limit. The resulting accident slows down traffic to a safe 5 mph under once again

Chains might be illegal here or are only legal during an actual storm as nobody uses them and I don't even know where to get any around here. They eat up the roads. Even studs are frowned upon.

Interesting mod. Good to know in case I ever hit the center reflector body color.

Studs are frowned upon here as well. I was up in Yosemite this weekend and they had chain control. They wouldn't let our lifted jeep in because we didn't have chains in the vehicle. EVEN though they wern't requiring us to put them on, they wouldn't let us through without them. After that guard left, the next one looked at us, smiled, and said "keep moving."

So we finally got in, but the point of the story is yet to come. Everyone was chaining up on a plowed road. It was rediculous. I had a friend from Montana and he was bug-eyed. "I'd drive this in a two wheel drive car without a problem. Why are they chaining up???" He was pretty shocked and I had to tell him of how lame californians are at bad weather situations. I'm glad I spent time in eastern and western washington. I learned real quick how to drive in all kinds of situations.

Californians are a special breed. I recall daily traffic jams from accidents on perfectly straight, flat roads with excellent visibility every day I travelled from Monterey to San Jose.

Perfectly flat roads & clear visability doesnt mean much when some braud wants to put on makeup. or some cheesehead is chit chatting on his phone, trying to jot down notes for some upcomming meeting.

And Scott. Your mod shows you using a Legacy L badge. That is only good for about 5hp. If you want the 15hp mod, you have to use a Legacy LSi badge. The Legacy LS badge is good for 10hp.

Little known fact, 90 L and LS badges give 10 and 15 hp respectively.

Are the badges cumulative, like Type R stickers, or does only the highest hp one count?

depends on what color you paint the back of them, I think. I'd imagine bright red or yellow double your badge horsepower output

And no, the tools are in the back with the spare.
