Gift for the body shop?

Well, I should be getting my car back tomorrow, and want to give the body shop that has it something as a token of my appreciation. They had my custom pinstripes repainted, and are trying to get my AC working as well(didn't work previous to the accident). I'm sure they've lost money on the deal, as insurance only cut them a check for $2300, which was the cost using used parts(they had to go with new ones instead) Brian has also been very helpful and understanding of me coming by on almost a weekly basis to photograph and check up on the car, and of course the near constant phone calls.

Anyway, I didn't know what was customary to bring to places like this. I brought them cookies a couple weeks ago, but would prefer to not do that again, I dont know what to do. A friend suggested Costco's meat and cheese platter, but it's kind of expensive, and huge. I was also thinking maybe starbucks and donuts, or pizzas, I really have no idea, any suggestions?

Indeed. . . usually a hit, and shouldn't be quite as much as a platter from Costco. . .

Pizzas are too cliche. . . and would get cold.

There are always desserts. . . a couple of cakes or something. . . I could help you make them, even.

Get some assorted deli meats and cheese at a grocery store - not too expensive. A dozen donuts is good as an incentive to get to something quicker (like what happens at the marina), but they sound like they deserve better than donuts.

Bring us some beer in the bike shop I work at and we'll do just about anything. The "usuals" know if they want to jump the schedule some food or beer is required. We have a hook up with a pizza delivery guy too. When he has a wrong order or a prank order he drops it off with us, he is taken care of. I promise they won't ask where you got it.

Yeah, lunch is a good idea.. with some cakes, or something. As long as it's special. Think of it this way though: You ever gonna have to see these guys again? Get 'em at least something in appreciation, even a box of donuts, and call it good. End of situation.

Go with the pizza and beer or the Subway. my mechanic always seems to fit me in faster when I do that.

I get that, but, really, if you're short on scrill, and can't get a big ol' meat/cheese platter from costco, and the six-foot sub comes close, do what you can. That was the point.

I don't think any gifts are customary, so be creative... I like the cake idea (try Red Velvet cake; I think I posted the recipe in another thread), or maybe you could make something savory and a little different, like tandoori-style chicken kabobs or gyros or something.

But pizza, subs, or beer are more likely to be consumed in the shop, especially if not everyone is there all at the same time.

Food definitely seems like the way to go, in any case.

Are you certain they're losing that much money on the deal? Most body shops, when they find a job is costing much more than the estimate, contact the insurance company and get another check.

For friends and such, I work for beer.

I built my boss a mountain bike wheel, and he bought me a case of Amber Bock for it. I happened to be on the clock at the same time. Double bling.

When you are paying, any gift on top of that is DEFINATELY appreciated by staff.

I sold a customer a truck in my short stint at the dealership. He was happy that I could help him out and that I was nice and friendly to him, he invited me to his daughters Quince. I, unfortunately, had to decline (in mexico at the time), but that was probably one of the most thoughtful gestures I've ever received.

in the latin american culture the Quince(keen-say) is the 15th birthday party, and always a huge deal, i'd imagine much like a bat mitzvah

I think that a cake is a good idea but if it were me I'd rather have something like a nice big tray of double chocolate brownies, yum.
