At long last

Post by Tleg93 »

I'm happy to say that my black SS is finally in the body shop and getting the rear end repaired, rust fixed and a fresh coat of paint, all for the fair price of 1.4k. I found a small local shop (1 guy) through a friend to fix it and he does excellent work to boot.

The insurance company sent me a check for $1900 when it was hit so I'm making out well. I paid $1k for the car and did $500 worth of repairs. In the end I'll wind up spending around $900 of my own money for everything, including buying the car. Seems like a good deal to me. I'm also going to get a replacement turbo and some tires. I'm stoked.

Yessiree, I can't wait either, it'll be great. After the body isn't an issue then I can straighten out the other odds and ends. After that it's mod time. It would just look awesome to have our white and black sedans side by side. :)

No, I'm at work on their laptop. They have a wireless system for their LAN. It's awesome, man, you can check the status of every sensor in the plant, inputs and outputs both, and you can change the the status of sensors (on to off and vice versa), energize solenoids, and actuate mechanical devices with the laptop all using a wireless LAN connection. It's called DeviceNet and it's pretty neat from a technical point of view.

Awesome, man! That's a great deal on the work, too. Damn, the plant your at sounds slick. Is it a fully automated plant? Do you control the machines for production or troubleshooting issues?

Yeah, I can control the machines with a wireless link through a laptop, palm pilot or whatever. It's pretty neat actually. If I wanted to I could mess with people by turning things on and off but I wouldn't do that. It is 'fully automated' but you still need people to load machines and whatever. It's great for troubleshooting. You can sit there and watch the program cycle through. It does get a little dry after 12 hours though.

You should get that invisi-shield stuff to keep it fresh. Are you changing the trim color at all or keeping it stock? Looking forward to seeing it this summer. I hope mine's something to look at by then, but we'll see. Got denied on the 50k service writer job for Cadillac. They said they couldn't insure me to drive (even though I wouldn't be driving any of their cars). I have two speeding tickets in three years (both a couple months ago. Dumbass that I am). Stiill, funny how much more money the gov'mnt would've gotten from me on income tax where all they claimed was a mere $300 total in tickets. I can't wait for the assmonkey cops to call again asking for money. Oh well, that job would've sucked in spite of the money and I like what I do now. Even if Jag asses occasionally fall in my face. If it leaked diff oil on me at the same time, would that be a hot carl?

That's awesome about Magen, Scott. No more bungee cord holding the trunk lid down! I am jealous. :)

That DeviceNet setup sounds really slick, too. Is it based on 802.11something? Or something proprietary?

Steve - I plan on keeping the trim silver at this point but as things progress over the next couple weeks we'll have to see. The guy that's doing the work is saying he's gonna work all the dings and small dents out too. I'm not having the pinstripe replaced. It looked fugly imo. I'm going to put my proline 7 spoke rims on it and in the future I'm going to get a new hood scoop and possibly a tail fin but that's not a priority. Oh, and the diff oil on your face wouldn't be a hot Carl unless you had the seran wrap on you first.

Vikash - DeviceNet uses the OSI model. It uses CAN communications to communicate between devices. Ethernet is 802.3. It's been a while since I've looked at communications standards but since it's based on the OSI model it can't really be proprietary. It's pretty interesting stuff. I've always thought it would be kind of neat if we could use a wireless link to do diagnostics on our cars but that may be too many bells and whistles for our subies. If you want the nitty gritty on the communications protocols and all that then check out this link.

I don't know if your read my post earlier, Vikash, but if you did you may have noticed you name without any message following it. My boss wandered by and I had to post an incomplete message.

I just wanted to let you know that. :) I'm an editing fool.

Oh, cool, CAN is actually used a lot in cars these days too. Neato burrito.

I believe OBD-III is supposed to include some wireless specification. People are focusing on the privacy and freedom implications, but it could potentially make diagnosis simpler if you're wealthy enough to be able to afford the equipment.

Hehe, I did notice the incomplete post and figured that was what happened. :)

Well, I just bought some tires, a replacement turbo, and some rotors for my ride. I went and saw it the other day. I was shocked. The guy already had the rear end pulled out and started the sandblasting. He only sandblasted the wheel wells though and that has me a little concerned. Aren't you supposed to grind out rust that has penetrated the metal? He was talking about fiberglass and while I realize that's part of the reason I'm getting it cheap, I don't want rust showing up four months down the road. I would rather he welded some metal in there.

Anyway, I went and picked up the deck lid, bumper and tail lights and lo and behold they were off of a black turbo, same year as mine (obviously the same year). There was an MTX sticker and a huge gaudy TURBO sticker on it...gay. I've never been a sticker person myself. It's nice the parts were black.

The car is done being painted. I go pick it up tonight or Sunday, woo hoo. He even took out the dings and stuff from the road. I can't wait to see it.

Pics coming soon

Yeah, the guy who is doing the car said he went off on it. He went and smoothed out all the dings and dents and fabbed a couple pieces too. I talked to him last night and he said that it needed a lot of work done and that I'd be happy with the outcome. There were holes in the rocker panels, etc. He likes the car though and says that he likes to put craftsmanship into his body work.

During this I discovered that the car's original color was indeed black. So, Vikash, there's an answer to that question I had a while ago about the original color. I'll admit it's pretty damn lazy to not just look up the color code. I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait to get it back. He said he needed to keep it a while longer and he was worried I'd be getting angry. I just said "Wha.. angry...me?" This guys doing a lot of work for the price, how could I be angry. I asked if all the additional work would raise the quote and he actually said he doesn't raise the estimated price.

It's funny, when I first took it to him he asked me what I thought was fair, incredible.
