Sidemarker turn signal mod.

I decided to do the turn signal mod for the sidemarkers listed on daniel stern's website but I was wondering whether there is a way to wire the sidemarkers to blink at the same time as the turn signals. Right now, they blink 180-degrees out of phase with the turn signals.

If you wire them the way Daniel Stern suggests, they will blink in phase with the turn signals when the parking lights are off, and 180 degrees out of phase when the parking lights are on.

There's no simple way to make them blink in phase with the turn signals all the time except to wire them as turn signals only (and not as parking/running lights).

Why do you want them to blink in phase?

Vikash, I'm not sure I understand what you mean. When your headlights are on, aren't the parking lights on as well? If so, would the sidemarkers be blinking out of phase when you have your headlights on?

Well that sucks. Is there a way to wire them so the sidemarkers are off all the time unless you have the turn signal on? Will that also help them blink in phase with the front signals? My wife's RS is wired this way and I don't see any problem with it safety wise for the Legacy.

Yes, you can just wire the sidemarker as another turn signal bulb. Wire it in parallel with the turn signal bulb, and it will always behave exactly the same way as the other two turn signal bulbs on that side of the car. I think a lot of Audis and VWs have it this way, as well as newer Subarus.

There is a slight safety disadvantage: you lose the marker light functionality which makes your car's presence and shape more visible from the side.

I don't get it. Why does the two lights blinking alternately suck? I actually think it looks kind of cool.

Interesting. I idn't notice how they blink in phase when the parking lights are off.

I just think it looks a little cleaner, personally. But I'll deal with the alternating light scheme.

Also, does the change in resistance in the lighting system affect the time delay between light pulses? The only reason I ask is that when one of the bulbs is burnt out (front or rear) the blinker blinks faster. By running another light in parallel with the system, I would think it would effectively decrease the total resistance of the circuit. Is that correct?

Yes, if you run more lights in parallel, you do slow down the blinking rate on most cars. Wiring the sidemarkers in shouldn't make a noticeable difference, though, since they have a fairly high resistance. And when the parking lights are on, the sidemarkers aren't actually in parallel with the turn signals anyway.
