does anyone know the model number of the turbocharger that comes as OE
on a 93 legacy turbo (AT, calif. etc.)? Also, what are the options on
replacing it with a better unit. I have heard that some legacy owners
are replacing the stock unit with a IHI vf 24. What are symptoms of a
bad wastegate control?

It is a IHI RHB 5 VF119011 made by Warner-ISHI I would imagine the
symptoms of a bad wastegate would be overboost,no boost,or an erratic
boost with spikes in the pressure corresponding with a stuck or
non-operable wastegate, a stuck open wastegate, or one that opens
erratically you should be able to see this on a gauge but wastegates
are fairly trouble free as far as I know because they are simple
units. There are several upgrades available and I know someone that
has several of the turbos that will work let me know if you want to
talk to him.

hmm... you talking about a bad wastegate solenoid or just the
diaphram thing? i pulled codes from my ecu the other day and came up
with a bad solenoid. anyone have any ideas on the price of a new on
or maybe how to take it out of the loop totally? i know it can be
bypassed with a manual boost controller but it's still in the
electrical system right? what's the symptoms with a bad solenoid if
it's any different from what's described below? thanks.

I don't think you would be able to take it out of the circuit because
the ECU checks to make sure that it is there and it is good and when
you take it out you would get the same result as you have now. It can
be checked with a meter. The waste gate actuator has a diaphram but
like I said that is pretty trouble free. When we have installed
controllers we just pulled the hose off of the sensor and kept
everything else.

AL,
you can e-mail me directly with the names/e-mail addresses if you'd
like or post them here. I've noticed that when I get to 3K rpm, the
waste gate fluctuates between full open and full shut. this happens
under no load and while driving. I've looked for leaks in the intake
system and there is no apparent leaks. (perhaps inside the turbo unit
itself?).
Any opinions on what upgrades with the regard to the chioces in turbo
replacement?

Larry, I checked on the turbos that we might have and didn't find a
lot except a new VF24. I have a TDO5 that I want to sell it is off a
'99 JDM WRX and is in almost new condition.
