Reliability of Legacy 4WD system
Hi there
My cousin (who also owns a 1993 EJ20T wagon) was recently told by his
mechanic that subaru legacy 4WD systems are known
to crap out after 10 years, regardless of how high or low the kilometres
travelled during this time.
I have never heard of this before - in fact I have always heard the
opposite, i.e. how reliable subaru's have proved to be.
Has anyones 4WD system suffered this fate? I tend not to believe his
mechanic. Perhaps he drives a toyota corolla.
cheers
Paul

never heard of this, never had a problem with the awd system. My old
Liberty had over 230,000km, was 10years old. My friend still has
his '90 wagon, 290,000km, still going no awd problems....

Reliability of Legacy 4WD system
Another confirmation - my other car 1.8GL wagon 1990 but less mileage
(107,000 miles) than my GT but still superb. In fact, can't remember where
or when (a couple of years a go at least) but read in some motoring journal
that Subaru 4WD system so good they don't even need to change it for the
next 5 years.

(107,000 miles) than my GT but still superb. In fact, can't remember where
or when (a couple of years a go at least) but read in some motoring journal
that Subaru 4WD system so good they don't even need to change it for the
next 5 years.

If you have a first gen legacy.....and it is an EJ20T it is most likely closed deck. If you have an EJ22 N/A it is open deck. If you have a EJ22T it's a closed deck.
The early EJ20T's were closed deck. Check out the SAE article on the subie motors. It's in the files section, plus it's on my site, and I think Dave's as well.
