wheel bearings? rear diff?

So lucky me I have a new noise coming from the back of my car. Originally i was suspecting the differential but having just read a thread about wheel bearings i'm hoping it's more likely a wheel bearing problem. The particular noise i get is a whine from the rear, hard to tell left or right. it only starts making noise when i'm going between 60-80 mph and quite annoying.

so let's say it's wheel bearings what is involved to removing the wheel bearings? any special tools needed? approximate time to do the whole job for left and right? any write ups exist?
