What & Where is the Best Coil Pack?

Post by Sam & Beth Barrett »

Background:

Went to go turn on the car this morning... Super rough idle. Clearly missing
on one cylinder. Pull the plugs. Found the culprit: #1 cylinder = no spark.
Checked connections: still no spark.

I replaced the plugs about 8,000 miles ago - so I don't think the spark is
comming from the pack (is there any such thing as a bad plug? it's just a
conductor with a space in the middle right?). Contacts on the plug look
good - not totally fouled with oil.

How do I know it's that one? When I pull the hood from the plug, the hood
was soaked in blow-by oil and such. Again the plug wasn't totally fouled -
as a result of the fact this is a new condition. I'm sure if I let the car
run for a while the plug would have been a mess. Also, when I pull the hood
(while the car is running) the vibration does not change at all. If it were
missing on 2 Cylinders it would have changed pattern, severity, etc.

Couple o' questions for the group:

1. Suggestions? What the hell is going on?
2. What is an MSD DIS-2 ? And why is it better (when upgraded)?

If this is a problem with the coil pack... which I think it may be... Which
is the coil pack everyone is upgrading to? I checked the archive. I think
Josh said to get a coil pack with a diamond on the front - I would have
expected that out of my wife, but not my Subaru...

This one's really for Jason G.

3. Do you know a place I can get Magnecore's from locally? If not, where
then...?

Thanks,

=Sambo

What & Where is the Best Coil Pack?

Post by Josh Colombo »

Sam,

First thing you need to do is test the coil pack. Get out your DVM and take some readings. If you don't have one....get one.

Get a resistance reading between the number 1 & number 2 leads, as well as a reading from the number 3 & 4 leads......basically the connections on either side of each other.

The hitachi coil pack should have a reading of 13-14k ohm range. The diamond coil pack should have a reading around 21-22 k ohms. Dave had a picture floating around but can't get access to it now.

Most likely you'll find one coil portion of the coil pack bad. There's some other tests you can do....which you can get out of the service manual....chiltons or haynes possibly.....if not....I've got the FSM.

If your coil pack is bad.....try and get a hold of the diamond one, as it handles more juice if you add the MSD-2 ignition system later down the line.

http://www.4subarusuzukikiaparts.com/ You can get the diamond coil pack from a 95 subaru legacy......these guys I think have 'em for like $50.

Hope that helps.

MSD (Multiple Spark Discharge) DIS (Distributorless Ignition System) -2 (?).
The shortest explanation of the unit is a ignition booster - can yeild
more spark. Why is it better? More spark = better fire = more complete
combustion of the fuel = better power and economy (well, in theory that is.

Which

Not sure which SPECIFIC ONE, but i hear the 2.5L one is the way to go

I can call a couple places here in Tacoma, I have to get a set too, so i'll
try to swing us a deal. If anyone else in the NW is interested, let me know
off list.

What & Where is the Best Coil Pack?

Post by Jay Erlenbach »

Ok here's one for any of you that have the coil pack
already.

I recently purchased a 97 or 98 (can't remember the
year for sure) legacy 2.5l coilpack. It looks somewhat
the same but here is the thing.
a. It doesn't fit in the same bolt holes as my
original
b. the plug is different
c. it's mostly made of a resin compound.

It does say "diamond" on it, and it is shaped the same
with the 1 across from the 2 and the 3 across from the
4. It also has three wires for the plug.

Now please tell me if I have purchased the one year
model where it is a different size coilpack or if
there is modification to make it fit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, otherwise I
just bought a really expensive paperweight.

Please Help

Jay, you got the new style. The plugs are male type rather then female type.

I called the subie dealer and I believe 97 they swapped to that style.

I had a buddy check his 95. It has the diamond. Try and get one from a 95. It will be a diamond and have the female plug type connector.

Jay,
You could also opt for the new style plug wires (female type) that will fit
your coil pack, you can get them OEM from Subaru or I know Magnecor and NGK
makes that style also. About the bolt holes lining up, if you can do it,
make a metal plate to fit between the coil and the intake with both bolt
hole patterns drilled through it, bolt the coil to the plate and then the
plate to the intake or vise versa. Hope this helps, john

Thats a good idea, unfortunatley I already have the
Magnecor KV 8.5 wires for the current coil. So I think
it would be more cost effective to attempt to sell
this new coil, cut my losses, and purchase the correct
coil. Can anybody please give me the part number that
I would need to use for the dealer?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks

Brian-

I ordered my wires directly from Magnecor (Telephone
(USA): 248-669-6688) and spoke to one of their
personel, If I remember correctly I paid somewhere
around $100 with shipping to my front door.

Hope this helps
