EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by frmrgz2rchz »

Hi all. I'm a rather new member here, and I haven't made many
posts. I figured I should introduce myself, and my current
project. My name is Andy, and I am from Columbus, OH. I have a
2WD, N/A '92 Legacy automatic. I plan on getting the EJ22T put in
within the next month, along with a manual swap. I know it seems
like a lot of work, and you may be thinking to just buy one with
turbo, or at least get a suby with AWD, but I figured this would be
different, and I bought this car without any intentions of fixing it
up, so I am stuck with what I have. I know that the ECU, MAF
sensor, engine wire harness, and fuel pump are needed for the swap.
Not really sure if that is it though. I plan on intercooling the
car at the same time as the swap. I have a Starion/Conquest fmic,
and a WRX top-mount. I am going to try to get the front mount to
work, but if it is too much trouble, I will go with the top-mount.
A new hood will have to be purchased if I do choose to use the top-
mount. Well, this is my situation, and of course, I have some
questions.

1. Which of the intercoolers that I have would yield a greater
output?

2. Do I need to get the turbo clutch kit, even though it's a 2WD
tranny or are they interchangable at all?

3. I don't think I can use my factory intake, so what complications
are there in a custom intake(ECU, sensors, etc.)?

4. Can the WRX downpipe be fitted to our turbos?

5. How much HP can the 2WD tranny sustain?

6. Lastly, are there any other concerns I should have?

Well, there you have it. I don't expect you to know all the
answers, just give me what input you can. All is appreciated.
Just wondering, anybody have 2WD turbo, or know of anyone? I like
being different, and I think it would be cool to be one of the only
ones to have this. Thanks.

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by Josh Colombo »

So are you swappin in a 5spd FWD tranny in for the auto?

The FWD tranny's CV axles are actually beefier then the AWD ones. Not
sure how the tranny is. The auto will deal with the power better then
the manual.

If you still want to go with the 5spd. I'd recommend some sort of LSD
or torqe varyin diff in the front. The quaife units are really nice,
around 1000 bucks though.....

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by georgerbyrne »

Without a turbo and with only 190kms on my Naturally Aspirated
liberty, i wrecked up my 5spd FWD box! That was just with some minor
mods to the engine, and i wasn't doing hard launches or rough
gearchanges! Second gear was missing two teeth and had snapped off
the driveshaft itself.

I would recommend you convert your car to AWD as i think the boxes
are tougher and more durable! That's what i did and i don't regret it
whatsoever! If you want more info on the conversion feel free to e-
mail me.

BTW there is a list of the parts required for the conversion in the
files section of this board.
Thanks, George, Australia.

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by Sam & Beth Barrett »

Here's the answers:

1.Buy a Honda
2.Buy a Honda
3.Buy a Honda
4.Buy a Honda
5.Buy a Honda

Here's why:

Intercoolers and clutch configurations are the last thing you are going to
worry about when it comes to doing the job. IMHO you ought to go for the
2.0L if you want to build a monster engine. Anyone considering swapping an
engine and a tranny to the 2.2L just for the sake of the extra 2 tenths of a
L is ignoring the additional power that can be evoked from a properly built
2 litre. Although the 2.2 is a mighty respectable engine and each has it's
benefits... I'm babling.

In either case, I suggest you buy a Honda. If you are going to spend all
that money on dumping in a monster intercooled engine into a front wheel
drive Subaru just to be different, in all actuality I think that's rather
obscure. Our chasis are heavier than the Hondas, our mod-ability is much
more dufficult than the Hondas, list goes on. If you want a front wheel
drive power house - by all means go get a Honda. Your money will be better
spent there by a long shot.

I'm not telling you any of this to be a jack-ass either. I whole heartedly
welcome you to our community of Legacy love. But I'm going to tell you what
I honestly think too. A friend is someone who will lie to you with their
smiles and their pleasantrys so as not to be rude. A true friend will tell
you what they think with frankness, laugh with you, and work with you.

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by georgerbyrne »

Sambo, I understand that you guys over there havn't had the WRX and
it's EJ20-T for long, but there is alot more to it than that.

The majority of the high powered WRX's and Liberty's (legacy's)in
Australia are actually not even the 2litre EJ20-T. The majority are
based on the EJ22 NA motor, with 97/98 model quad cam heads. These
can be stroked out to huge capacity's and are the real performers on
the street in Australia. We have WRX's cruising around with up to 2.8
litres!!

It is common to hear amoung my friends that they're not even going to
bother racing a car becuase it only has the 2 litre!
If done correctly the EJ22 has alot more potential and is just as
easy to attain bang for buck mods as the EJ20-T. This also does not
mean huge dollars, but can be done for quite a cheap amount.

I'm not saying the EJ20-T is not as good, but if your building a
monster motor, the EJ22-T would be alot better, with more potential!

It is closed deck, you can simply bolt on quad cam heads off an EJ20-
T and then you basically have a stroked EJ20-T! Then, if "properly
built" it would have a much greater potential than the EJ20-T alot of
which are not even closed deck.
Just my opinion, not trying to start a fight!
Thanks, George, Australia.

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by Andrew Mouser »

I have a differing opinion Sam, regarding the
recommendation of a custom turbo Honda. I friend in
Colorado Springs, Colorado was telling me of the great
ordeal and strengthening the Hondas have to undertake
to receive a turbo. He's a mechanic at a speed shop
and he went on to explain it as being the engine
components Honda uses are lesser quality material. As
in, the tolerances are lower and they get less pure
metals causing a great deal of work to strengthen the
Hondas. Just one source I spoke to, but something to
consider.

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by milehial2000 »

You mentioned the wiring harness that is about the most difficult
item on the list. The stock engine to ECU harness takes two routes one
through the firewall and the other through the inner fender and
re-enters the body on the left side. Both parts of the harness are
entangled with a lot of other wiring. The only extra wires needed for
the EJ22t are those for turbo control, the pressure sensor, and
solenoids, a total of five. I left the harness intact on my '95
impreza and added the five wires (one more for the knock sensor) or
six, punched a hole through the firewall and had it running in 10% of
the time it will take you to replace that harness. ( I tried it once).

Here's the answers:

1.Buy a Honda
2.Buy a Honda
3.Buy a Honda
4.Buy a Honda
5.Buy a Honda

Here's why:

Intercoolers and clutch configurations are the last thing you are going
to worry about when it comes to doing the job. IMHO you ought to go for
the 2.0L if you want to build a monster engine. Anyone considering
swapping an engine and a tranny to the 2.2L just for the sake of the
extra 2 tenths of a L is ignoring the additional power that can be
evoked from a properly built 2 litre. Although the 2.2 is a mighty
respectable engine and each has it's benefits... I'm babling.

In either case, I suggest you buy a Honda. If you are going to spend all
that money on dumping in a monster intercooled engine into a front wheel
drive Subaru just to be different, in all actuality I think that's
rather obscure. Our chasis are heavier than the Hondas, our mod-ability
is much more dufficult than the Hondas, list goes on. If you want a
front wheel drive power house - by all means go get a Honda. Your money
will be better spent there by a long shot.

I'm not telling you any of this to be a jack-ass either. I whole
heartedly welcome you to our community of Legacy love. But I'm going to
tell you what I honestly think too. A friend is someone who will lie to
you with their smiles and their pleasantrys so as not to be rude. A true
friend will tell you what they think with frankness, laugh with you, and
work with you.

-Sambo

Hi all. I'm a rather new member here, and I haven't made many posts. I
figured I should introduce myself, and my current project. My name is
Andy, and I am from Columbus, OH. I have a 2WD, N/A '92 Legacy
automatic. I plan on getting the EJ22T put in within the next month,
along with a manual swap. I know it seems like a lot of work, and you
may be thinking to just buy one with turbo, or at least get a suby with
AWD, but I figured this would be different, and I bought this car
without any intentions of fixing it up, so I am stuck with what I have.
I know that the ECU, MAF sensor, engine wire harness, and fuel pump are
needed for the swap. Not really sure if that is it though. I plan on
intercooling the car at the same time as the swap. I have a
Starion/Conquest fmic, and a WRX top-mount. I am going to try to get
the front mount to work, but if it is too much trouble, I will go with
the top-mount. A new hood will have to be purchased if I do choose to
use the top- mount. Well, this is my situation, and of course, I have
some questions.

1. Which of the intercoolers that I have would yield a greater output?

2. Do I need to get the turbo clutch kit, even though it's a 2WD tranny
or are they interchangable at all?

3. I don't think I can use my factory intake, so what complications are
there in a custom intake(ECU, sensors, etc.)?

4. Can the WRX downpipe be fitted to our turbos?

5. How much HP can the 2WD tranny sustain?

6. Lastly, are there any other concerns I should have?

Well, there you have it. I don't expect you to know all the answers,
just give me what input you can. All is appreciated. Just wondering,
anybody have 2WD turbo, or know of anyone? I like being different, and
I think it would be cool to be one of the only ones to have this.
Thanks.

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by Josh Colombo »

George,

The EJ22 N/A is open deck. Check out the SAE articles either on my site
or dave's about the new subaru motors. It says the EJ20 is closed deck
and the EJ22 is open deck.

This is not sayin there were a few early model EJ22's with closed deck.
The EJ20's in 94 or somewhere around there switched to open deck.....and
to my knowledge, everything is now open deck, except for the sti.

It is closed deck, you can simply bolt on quad cam heads off an EJ20- T
and then you basically have a stroked EJ20-T! Then, if "properly
built" it would have a much greater potential than the EJ20-T alot of
which are not even closed deck.
Just my opinion, not trying to start a fight!
Thanks, George, Australia.

Josh, i know the EJ22 NA is an open deck, but the point i was making
was that the EJ22-T is a closed deck, and therefore a good base for
mods!
According to alot of performance shops i've spoken to in Australia,
the open/closed deck factor isn't meant to be an issue unless your up
around the 350kw+ mark. And if need be an open deck block can be
closed up for about $500 here in Australia.

It's not stopping me making my EJ22NA motor a turbo :D
Thanks, George, Australia

My intentions are set on the FWD tranny, although the swap has yet
to be purchased. The idea of converting to AWD has crossed my mind,
but the person actually doing the work was unsure of its
complexity. If I find that the process isn't too bad, I may go with
it, but as of now, I'm still going with the FWD

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by frmrgz2rchz »

I have heard that the harness is very difficult to remove from one
source, and another source tells me it's no problem at all. Either
way, if I can use my current harness, it would be nice. I haven't
bought the turbo harness yet. I've had a couple problems locating
one. Then when I finally locate the harness, and call to buy it a
week later, they tell me that the thing has been cut, because they
feel that is the fastest way to remove the engine. I don't know,
but all I saw was three little harness attachments that needed
unplugged to remove the engine. Then again, I'm not an expert at
that kind of thing. Thanks for the tip, I might try it.

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by Josh Colombo »

To swap, you will need the rear suspension pieces, and if you're doin that....may change over to the new style end links & sway bar. I think the spindle may be the only thing that actually needs to be changed back at the hubs.

Of course you'll need driveline, diff, cross member bolting etc....

Fuel tank, jet pump, and fuel pump, and prob some additional brackets for mounting the AWD.

If you want to go this route.....best bet.....buy a cheap legacy or whatever and just cannibalize all the parts for the swap.

Later down the line....like way later down the line, and I turn my car into project car.....that is probably what I will do....buy a used legacy so I have all the parts there for the swap.

Sam & Beth Barrett

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by Sam & Beth Barrett »

George, et.al.

I see your point exactly. And one day, I hope to go one of those two routes
myself. And my intent was not to get into a "which engine is better" debate
(which would be entertaining in it's own right). Although I have to say the
cars you Aussies have only serve to piss off the power starved Americans
like myself who have to keep it under 60mph on 4 and 6 lane highways. :oP

With that said, getting back to the point of my response, it occurs to me
that taking a vehicle that was designed with 4wd in mind and building a
beefed up 2wd version is a little bit ridiculous. The chasis is heavier,
parts are more expensive, and at the end of the day - you still have a FWD
car! Now there are some AMAZING FWD cars out there...

But let's get real.

If you want performance front wheel drive THAT bad - why would you do it
with a Subaru? There's absolutely no reason I can think of. Not when there
are sooo many options availible on the Honda/Acura line with or without
turbo. Lighter chasis, in-line engine, a zillion vendors, junk yards all
over the place, part availibility, maintainence/repair guru's on every
street corner, V-Tech, list goes on forever... But if you want AWD - you
wouldn't want to do it with a Honda. That's why I'm a Subaru owner baby!

This guy seems really excited to do a helluva lot of work on a Subaru to get
a FWD car that will pull some nice numbers. Bang for buck - I'm telling him
to go over to the otherside of the fence where his dollar will stretch a
little further and he'll have an easier time achieving his desires. That's
all.

I got a buddy up here who spent >$200 between a cold air intake, integra
headers he got from a U-Pull, and a few other doo-dads and his car showed
marked improvement. Now he's dropping $2.2K on a fully built out Integra
block and head. He'll still be N/A, he'll be out only $2400, and he'll have
one helluva fast little civic. We can't do that with our cars and achieve
the same performance increase with only a $2400 investment. We can get a new
block for that price - sure as hell can't get it blueprinted, balanced,
ported, polished and flowed... Don'cha think? I thought that would be better
advise for the guy. That's all. Am I wrong?

Post by frmrgz2rchz »

I agree. A honda would have been nice. I wish they would have had
a 93+ civic at the "buy here, pay here" lot where I purchased my
Legacy. I bought my car 2 years ago, and paid about 4 grand for
it. I was 17 at the time, and my parents didn't have the credit to
help me out. Now, being in college, what little money I do have
goes to my Legacy. I didn't know about the 2.0L when I first wanted
to go turbo. I didn't find out about it until after I bought the
2.2L and joined this group. I really am not looking for great power
though, so the extra money I would have spent on the 2.0 wouldn't
have been worth it. I think I am having enough trouble locating the
parts for the 2.2 turbo. I respect your opinions, but I like my
suby, and I am going to stay loyal.

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by frmrgz2rchz »

Unfortunately, $2400 is more than a quarter of my yearly income. I
intended on starting out small, by just getting the engine put in.
Then as more money came my way, I would make modifications. I just
wanted to go a little bit at a time. I have no interest in putting
my engine in the machine shop, and getting everything done at once.
Well, no money as well as no interest. I doubt this will be my last
project, but you have to realize it is my first. I have yet to
spend a grand between the engine, ECU, MAF, downpipe, intercooler,
intake, and BOV. My cousin, who is also my mechanic, is helping me
out a lot. I'll have to let you know where I stand once I get $2400
invested, hopefully pretty good. No, you're not wrong. If I ever
decide to go that route, which I probably won't, I understand it
will be expensive. But, I'm not really looking for 13 second
times. I just want something that surprises people. I love the
element of surprise.

EJ22 to EJ22T Engine Swap

Post by georgerbyrne »

Hehe, i understand what your saying totally!
It should not be left a FWD it will blow the box in the first day!

As for us Aussies having it easy.. i don't think so, our highway's
are also 100km/h.(60mph) It get's really boring, but i'm from
Brisbane and our 4 lane (each way) highway to the Gold-Coast
transforms into one of the best illegal street racing highways in
Australia every thursday, friday and saturday, so we get our fun :D

My car is still too slow though, and for this reason, i'm going to
make something a little different in Australia. Basically it will be
the same as the EJ22-T in the US, without the oil squirters, but with
a front mount intercooler and a turbo off a mitsubishi canter
truck! :D (basically a highway racing car with lots of top end)

However, as you were saying that guy spent $2400 and got a fast
honda..... well as a parts donor for my turbo conversion i'm buying a
perfect EJ20-T ready to start. It will cost $250 $A (about $125
american! :D) My conversion should be about 1200$Aus all up including
an aftermarket ECU :D so that's a little more cost effective i think!
Just wish i could afford it now!
I'll keep all of you filled in on the progress!
George, Australia.

Not to be flippant but I thought we were all here because we didn't want to
settle for a Honda. It's like going to 31 flavors and getting vanilla.
Hondas are infinitly modifiable, but in the end it is still just a Honda. I
would rather have a tight and classy Suby that is slower and heavier than
the 14th Civic on my block with a wing and ground effects.

Just the opinion of someone who hears anti-Suby pro-Honda Sh*t from hsi
friends all the time.

01=my two bits,

Thanks.
